Description
Overview
BUCS Nationals is returning to the City of Sheffield from the 14-16 February 2025. Taking place over four city centre venues over three days, we are expecting 4,300 student athletes to compete for BUCS titles over the six sports.
In addition to Badminton, the EISS will also host Indoor Athletics. Right next door at the newly opened Canon Medical Arena Fencing will take place. Swimming will once again return to its home at Ponds Forge, and Karate will also take place here. Climbers will be challenging their skills at The Climbing Works on Saturday.
Purpose
The purpose of Shuttle Control concerns shuttles both for the event and for practice, and is led by the Shuttle Control Manager.
To cater mainly for differences in temperature, BUCS aims to ensure two speeds of shuttle are available.
The Tournament Referee (TR) will test and decide which speed of shuttles to start the tournament with, and a new test will be made before each day of play. The TR may delegate this duty to the Shuttle Control Manager if suitably qualified.
Role
The role in this event is designed for a current/past experienced player who appreciates the subtlety of speed/state of wear and tear/value (cost) of shuttlecocks, and issue of appropriate speed shuttles according to hall conditions.
The person appointed will be located in the main hall (12 courts across 3 sections) and also responsible for an ‘arms length’ supply of shuttles to a second 4-court hall (the blue hall).
The role holder will be supplied with a radio for contact with the tournament referee (at event control desk on the balcony of the main hall).
The role holder will be required to operate in continuous awareness of player needs/supply of shuttles without disruption to play on adjacent courts.
In detail, the role holder will:
1. Ensure total shuttle supply for the event is held securely in a store room off the main hall, with planning/preparation of supply on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at end of play ready for the following day’s play.
2. Set up process of sifting “used” (no further use) shuttles into used tubes, retrieving knock-up shuttles from courts at finish of each match, and placing same on each court before each new match commences for knock-up purposes.
3. Maintain oversight of supply of new shuttles as/when a player indicates need. The support volunteers will operate to achieve this under the guidance of the Shuttle Control Manager.
4. Ensure main hall shuttle table is continuously manned using support volunteers, as also the Blue Hall.
o Note: play will run 09.00 – 21.00 on Fri and Sat, and Sun 09.00 – with close of play/finals around 17.00 – 18.00.
5. Maintain oversight of the ‘field of play (the courts) through personal and associated volunteer awareness to ensure courts are free of obstructions.
6. At the end of play, make a daily report to the Referee on shuttle usage to assure good management.
7. As and when relevant, alert the TR to a court becoming/remaining free where the TR does not have line of sight of a court/courts.
The Badminton Championships takes place from Friday 14 February to Sunday 16 February, and volunteers will be needed all three days. There will be morning and afternoon/evening shifts available on each day. We ask volunteers to be available for a minimum of 8 hours over the three days.
Volunteers will be provided with a BUCS Volunteer T-Shirt and snacks and refreshments whilst on shift. Expenses can be claimed for travel and accommodation will be provided.
HOW TO APPLY
If you are interested in the role you must apply directly through the BUCS website, indicating any experience you have at competitions for this sport and why you would like to volunteer at BUCS Nationals.
