Job Description The Cardiology Sister/Charge Nurse is a pivotal role in leading and managing the Cardiology Outpatient Department at the Oxford Heart Centre. The post holder will ensure high standards of patient care and service delivery by providing expert clinical leadership and operational management. They will act as a visible and accessible leader, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams and key stakeholders to meet departmental and organisational objectives. The role balances responsibilities across clinical practice, staff management, education, and service development, whilst maintaining a patient-centred approach to care. The post holder will also ensure compliance with trust policies, statutory regulations, and professional guidelines. Main Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities Promote excellence in outpatient cardiology nursing practice, demonstrating expert knowledge and skills in managing complex and evolving patient needs. Act as a credible clinical role model, ensuring care is evidence-based and focused on the needs of the patient. Be a visible and accessible leader, engaging with patients, relatives, and staff to support high-quality care and positive experiences. Collaborate with the Non-Invasive Cardiac Physiology team to streamline outpatient processes and enhance patient pathways. Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation, demonstrating proficiency with IT systems and digital tools. Lead clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and service efficiency. Education and Development Foster a culture of learning, supporting the professional development of all staff within the department. Provide mentorship tailored to individual staff needs, ensuring alignment with personal and organisational goals. Develop and implement training programmes to enhance clinical competencies and maintain mandatory training compliance. Act as an expert resource, offering guidance and knowledge to team members regarding cardiology outpatient services. Managerial and Leadership Lead the daily operations of the department, ensuring seamless service delivery and adherence to trust and government targets. Proactively manage staff performance, rosters, and development, conducting appraisals and facilitating ongoing feedback. Collaborate with the Cardiology Matron and the Cardiac Physiology Lead for Non-Invasive Services to align operational and professional goals. Oversee recruitment, retention, and workforce planning, promoting a positive and inclusive working environment. Assist in the management of the departmental budget, ensuring resource allocation supports efficient service delivery and patient care. Participate in strategic planning and lead the implementation of service improvements and change initiatives. Facilitate communication within the multidisciplinary team and across departments to ensure collaborative and effective working relationships. Professional Responsibilities Maintain active registration and professional development in line with NMC standards. Practise in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct, acting as an ambassador for nursing and cardiology services. Uphold trust values, promoting equity and inclusivity for staff and patients. Clinical Governance and Risk Management Monitor and manage risk within the department, conducting assessments in line with trust policies. Participate in incident reporting and follow-up, ensuring learning is integrated into practice. Lead on quality assurance initiatives, including service evaluations and compliance monitoring. Ensure alignment with trust policies, clinical governance frameworks, and statutory health and safety regulations. Other Responsibilities Represent the department in trust-wide initiatives, projects, and meetings. Support the development and implementation of local and national cardiology outpatient strategies. Undertake other duties as required by departmental or organisational needs, commensurate with the grade and role.
