Job Description:
Overview
The Specialist Speech and Language Therapist role is challenging yet exciting, requiring versatility in providing individualized communication and dysphagia support to our specialist population. The post combines clinical, administrative, and supervisory duties. You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team under the supervision of senior leadership but will be expected to autonomously manage your caseload, including assessment, direct and indirect therapy programs, and line managing a speech and language therapy assistant.
The post holder will provide speech and language therapy services prioritizing needs identified by the assessment process as stated in the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or via our MDT assessments of need.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Manage and prioritize a caseload including communication and dysphagia needs
2. Carry out comprehensive communication, swallowing, eating and drinking assessments
3. Provide advice on suitability and therapy needs of prospective students
4. Provide individual aims for communication and eating and drinking as part of the MDT for Individual Education Plans
5. Provide individual programs for communication, assistive technology, swallowing and feeding
6. Deliver speech and language interventions to individuals, small groups or within the classroom as required
7. Maintain concise clinical recording in accordance with professional guidelines
8. Monitor eating and drinking support practice and provide training as required
9. Promote Total Communication practice across the service
10. Work with staff and family members to ensure consistent, joined up communication support
11. Attend and contribute to reviews, providing written reports where required
12. Make onward referrals for specialist assessment or advice in respect of AAC or dysphagia
13. Provide induction and individualised training as required
14. Supervise and line manage speech and language therapy assistant(s)
15. Work within professional boundaries and seek guidance where required
Duties will vary; you must expect to diversify and lend a hand wherever is required.
Skills and Qualifications:
1. Speech and Language Therapy degree at graduate or masters level
2. Certificate to practise Speech and Language Therapy
3. Registered member of RCSLT and HCPC
4. Post-graduate dysphagia training
5. Competencies at Level C of RCSLT Eating, Drinking and Swallowing Competency Framework (EDSCF)
6. Requirement to undertake relevant learning, continued professional development and clinical supervision as required by RCSLT and HCPC
7. Willingness to maintain clinical links with relevant clinical groups to develop specialist expertise and knowledge relating to the role (such as dysphagia and AAC groups)
Knowledge:
1. Person-centred approaches to support
2. Legislation relating to consent and restrictive practice within the Mental Capacity Act
3. Positive behaviour support planning and interventions
4. AAC systems and approaches
5. IDDSI, dysphagia interventions and feeding issues relating to this caseload
Experience:
1. Working with children and young people with SEND, PMLD and ASD
2. Working with children and young people with complex communication, swallowing and feeding needs
3. Working with hi and lo-tech AAC systems
4. Delivering provision through EHCP process
5. Working in early years, school, college or residential settings
6. Working with a dysphagia caseload
7. Working within a multi-disciplinary team
