The sister / charge nurse is regarded as one of the senior team and will support and lead staff to ensure high quality care is delivered to all patients attending the department. The role carries the continuing responsibility for the management of the department, as delegated by the Matron.
The post holder will aim to ensure that all patients are provided with a safe and high-quality standard of care. They will be aware of the Care Quality Commission standards and support the multi-disciplinary team ensuring that they are maintained. The post holder also has clinical, teaching, managerial, and staff development responsibilities.
Main duties of the job
1. Working autonomously whilst working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, assessing and managing a caseload of patients within the department. Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professionals to ensure seamless service delivery.
2. To act as a role model of expert clinical practice.
3. To ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to a high standard. Be a competent user of and participate in the ongoing development of the Electronic Patient Record.
4. To work in close liaison with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
5. To participate in quality and audit initiatives within the department.
6. To use clinical expertise and skills to accurately assess patient's individual needs and to manage clinical priorities appropriately.
7. To co-ordinate and supervise the management and planning of nursing care within the department when undertaking clinical shifts.
8. Maintain a safe and acceptable environment for patients, visitors, students and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of cleaning. Coordinate the reporting of all such incidents for the area in liaison with Matron.
9. To ensure that all patients who use the service do so in a timely manner ensuring equality, privacy and dignity needs are met.
10. To challenge practice so that the best and most appropriate treatment is given to the patient.

Person Specification
Governance
* Sound knowledge of the principles & practice of patient care
* Ability to manage change, both personally & as a facilitator
* Awareness of current NHS issues & appreciation of the issues surrounding governance & quality initiatives
* Knowledge of adult and child safeguarding
* Project management, knowledge & skills
* Ability to manage databases
* Ability to recognize the contribution of members of the MDT
Clinical skills and experience
* A minimum of 5 years recent post registration emergency nursing experience.
* A minimum of 2 years' recent experience working at Band 6 level
* Leadership and management experience
* Able to critically analyse and apply research to the clinical setting
* Experience of working with an electronic patient record and other basic IT systems
* Clinical supervision experience
Qualifications
* Hold registered mentor or teaching / education qualification
* Clinical competence in IV drug administration, Venepuncture & Cannulation & X-ray requesting
* Working towards Masters level study
Professional Attributes
* Ability to demonstrate initiative and self-motivation
* IT skills e.g., word, excel, outlook and hospital database experience
