Health Care Assistant - William Brown Centre
The post holder works under indirect supervision of the practice nurse team leader and undertakes tasks and duties delegated by the practice nurse team leader or a suitably qualified regulated professional. They will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients, following policy and procedures. They can provide supervision to practice phlebotomists as required.
Main Duties of the Job
1. Communication:
o Communicate effectively with other team members.
o Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication.
2. Personal and People Development:
o Take responsibility for own developmental learning and performance.
o Take responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal development.
o Work with management on any new training requirements.
o Recognise and understand the roles and responsibilities of individuals working in the primary health care team.
o Be aware of the legal issues pertinent to the role of a basic HCA (level 1).
3. Health, Safety and Security:
o Use and encourage others to be familiar with the personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines.
o Identify the risks involved in work activities and undertake them in a way that manages the risks.

Person Specification
Skills and Abilities
* Demonstrates a basic understanding of the needs of the patient and the role of the HCA.
* Willing to develop clinical skills and competency relevant to the role (e.g., phlebotomy skills).
* Manual dexterity and manipulation skills.
* Ability to handle simple medical equipment (e.g., ECG machine).
* Fitness to do the job within manual handling policy.
* Able to communicate routine information that requires tact and persuasive skills, or where there may be barriers to understanding.
* Ability to communicate effectively via telephone or group discussion.
* Good interpersonal skills.
* Participate in the care of equipment.
* Undertake stock control.
* Must either be Hepatitis B immune or be willing to undergo an immunisation course.
* Reliable.
* Understand issues regarding accountability.
* Demonstrate an understanding of the Data Protection Act and patient confidentiality, clinical and information governance, and Caldicott requirements.
Experience
* Has customer care experience or experience of being a carer.
* Experience of working unsupervised.
* Willingness to complete NVQ 2 or 3 in a related subject.
Qualifications
* Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
* Basic computer experience.
* Have the Care Certificate or be willing to undertake it.
* Experience in phlebotomy.
* Willingness to undertake an NVQ or an equivalent qualification.
