x2 Trainee Physiologist's
Band 4 - 37 hours per week
Train to provide a complex, specialist Clinical Neurophysiology service to patients of all ages and from a range of specialities suffering from a wide variety of medical disorders; both neurological and/or psychiatric in nature.
Main duties of the job
Train in specialist diagnostics and work collaboratively on a day-to-day basis with others in a team to contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the service. Participate in training, education and assessment in line with National and Professional requirements; this includes the use of analytical and judgemental skills in data analysis and the provision of patient reports.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Maintain high professional standards of Neurophysiological services to patients.
2. Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure service(s) meet changing healthcare needs.
3. Follow guidelines for the implementation of policies and standard operating procedures.
4. Train to independently perform, analyse, interpret and report routine Encephalograms (EEG’s) in a dedicated environment, using standardised techniques on patients of all age groups. This includes performing activation procedures and taking appropriate action where necessary.
5. Train to independently perform emergency, portable EEG’s in a non-dedicated environment; such as Critical Care Units (CCU) or general wards.
6. Train to independently perform more complex EEG investigations using special techniques; these include recordings following sleep deprivation and recordings during administration of medication (E.g. melatonin, diazepam).
7. The performance of EEG will be under supervision initially, with a documented training and assessment plan and eventual sign-off of competency.
8. Training in the performance of Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) for the diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel syndrome.
9. Training to perform all modality evoked potentials taking appropriate action(s) where necessary.
10. Train to assist Consultant Neurophysiologists with EMG (Electromyographic) examinations and NCS during medical clinics.
11. Train to perform simple fault remedy, cleaning and maintenance of recording equipment or any apparatus within the department; including care and maintenance of electrodes and transducers.
Person specification
Qualifications
* A levels (Grade A-C) including a science subject
* BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Neurophysiology) or BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Neurophysiology) or BTEC ONC Science (MPPM)
* Association of Neurophysiological Scientists (ANS) Professional Examinations in EEG, VEP, NCS or ANS Part I and II.
* ECNE Part 1
* NVQ Level 3 in Neurophysiology
* RCCP Registered
* ANS Member
Knowledge, skills, training and experience
* Previous NHS experience working with patients
* Working within a multi-disciplinary environment/team
* Experience/knowledge in nerve condition studies (NCS)
* Experience/knowledge in Electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings, in a wide range of patients, including neonates and those on critical care.
* Experience/knowledge in Evoked Potentials (EP)
* Appropriate analytical skills to assess patient state and test results.
* Experience working in a Neurophysiology Department
* Knowledge of other communication methods. E.g. signing or a second language.
