Senior Corporate Communications Manager International
Summary Description
The Senior Manager, International Communications will represent the Corporate Communications function in Europe, reporting to the Director of International Communications. The person in this role will have responsibility for media relations, internal communications, issues management and corporate reputation, in close collaboration with colleagues around the world and across functions. This individual will bring to the role a strong understanding of European media, particularly in the UK and Ireland, and experience in internal communications. The person in this role must be an excellent writer and communicator, with an eye for detail and ability to prioritize competing tasks. This individual will be adaptable to new situations, bringing a high level of energy and passion for the company's mission of delivering transformative medicines to patients with genetic conditions.
Responsibilities
1. Lead on-the-ground communications for BioMarin in Europe, representing the team on cross-functional projects, new product launches and disease awareness campaigns, in close partnership with the Director of International Communications and the full Corporate Communications team.
2. Develop external/internal communications strategy for key markets and sites, partnering with local teams and in-country colleagues.
3. Lead development, including approval process, for press releases, employee emails, social media content and other internal/external communications.
4. Manage UK/Ireland PR firms directly and collaborate with marketing teams/agencies in other countries to maintain a pulse on relevant product communications initiatives and reputational issues across Europe.
5. Partner with Ireland team (particularly at Shanbally manufacturing facility, which is the largest ex-U.S. BioMarin site) to elevate BioMarin's reputation, distinguishing the company from competitors.
6. Plan and manage internal events, including local/regional town halls, and lead additional employee engagement events.
7. Provide communications counsel, with support from the global team, to European patient advocacy and government affairs colleagues.
8. Elevate BioMarin activities in Europe for media/social media globally; collaborate with internal communications team to highlight the work of colleagues in Europe on company-wide internal channels.
9. Monitor media in key European markets, with agency support, distributing coverage as needed.
10. Work closely with European patient advocacy, government affairs and other cross-functional country teams on issues management.
11. Adapt global press releases and media statements for local markets.
12. Identify and respond to needs for new/updated collateral material in Europe.
13. Seek opportunities to position senior-level executives on regional or global platforms to advance strategic policy and business objectives.
14. Serve as a trusted advisor.
Scope
Travel around 25% of the time (will need to support London/Shanbally/Dublin).
Education
Fluent in English (written and spoken). Other languages a plus, particularly in markets where BioMarin is seeking growth (Italian, German, Spanish). A university degree is required (in Public Relations, Communications or any relevant field).
Experience
1. At least five years of biopharma industry public relations experience, either in-house or at a PR agency; must include both media and internal comms.
2. Strong knowledge of reputational issues for the industry in Europe, including market access and health technology assessments, regulatory and legal systems, intellectual property and privacy.
3. Effectiveness operating in complex, global organizations and regulatory environments.
4. Excellent writer and natural storyteller with superior verbal communications skills.
5. Ability to build consensus across the organization and work as part of a growing team.
6. Demonstrated experience managing budget (this person is responsible for relationships with several PR agencies and other vendors).
7. Ability to prioritize requests from multiple stakeholders, identifying what is urgent and responding accordingly.
Equipment
Computer skills, including comfortability with Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, etc.).
