Great Ormond Street Hospital Mortuary is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals for the post of an Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT).
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our HTA and ISO credited forward thinking team. We will consider applicants who are awaiting a Pass award for the level 3 diploma in APT in 2024. You will already have a significant range of skills and expertise in a mortuary environment. You must be able to communicate well with people and be willing to participate in all activities related to the mortuary. You will work as part of a team, with other professionals and provide an exceptional service.
The duties are both physical and practical and include document control (electronic and written), preparing patients for family visits and dealing with families directly. Meticulous attention to detail, recall of information, and ability to work with others, especially the bereaved, is vital. You will have experience and a clear understanding of working with the deceased and bereaved ideally in a paediatric/perinatal environment. You will demonstrate knowledge of the processes following death including documentation and options available to the bereaved. Demonstration of knowledge of the following standards relevant to the processes applied in the mortuary environment is expected: HTA, ISO (ISO 15189), and Bereavement Services Standards.
Main duties of the job
* To participate in all mortuary procedures including administration, cleaning and assistance at post mortem and research.
* To ensure all documentation and electronic records are accurate and completed daily
* To receive and make calls as necessary ensuring confidentiality and information issues are maintained
* Participates in the routine and specialist work of the Department which will include: admission, measuring and registration of patients ensuring they are identified and cared for in a suitable manner
* Receiving referrals from internal and external service users and providing accurate information regarding time scales
* Assisting service users with their enquiries ensuring Trust policy is followed.
* To be responsible for identifying and addressing your own continuing professional development and maintaining a personal CPD folder. Maintain expertise and awareness of developments that affect the service provided and identify changes that might be necessary to ensure the service provided is relevant and current
* Maintain a record of training and competency for all activities
* To keep up-to-date with current mortuary and bereavement practices and guidance from the Human Tissue Authority, the Health and Safety Executive and any other
professional bodies and organisations (SANDS) relating to mortuaries, postmortem rooms and retained organs and Department of Health.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training
Essential criteria
* Certificate and Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology. (RSPH or RIPHH) Or Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology.
* GCSE in Maths, English and Science
* Fellowship of the Association of Anatomical Pathology Technology
Desirable criteria
* Science Council registered
* Training and experience of working in a paediatric area
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
* Knowledge of Coroners and Hospital documentation, including consent forms and information necessary to carry out post mortem examinations
* Medical Terminology
* An understanding and experience of participation in relevant inspections such as HTA, CPA, UKAS, CQC
* Demonstrate CPD activities and reflective learning
* Experience assisting with viewings for the bereaved
Desirable criteria
* Experience of teaching/training other professionals. Supervision of other staff and visitors.
Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
* Ability to eviscerate and reconstruct all types of post mortems. (Coroners, Forensic, Paediatric, Neuropath, Infection risk)
* Ability to liaise with others, plan and prioritise referrals and carry out all general duties
* Excellent inter-personal and communication skills (written and verbal)
* Excellent organisational skills and ability to multi-task and prioritise work. Accuracy and attention to detail
* Ability to work without supervision and to organise and manage own workload and meet deadlines
* Competent computer skills, use of QPulse, PIMs, PACS or other mortuary electronic recording systems
Desirable criteria
* Ability to take post mortem consent.
