About the role
Within our Commercial Shipping Capability, we are looking for a highly skilled and experienced technical leader that can lead teams of engineers, act in a technical assurance capacity, and help support the development of opportunities and our Capability within the UK and beyond.
As the Production Engineering Capability Service Lead, you will act as the professional lead for the Production Engineering Capability within the Commercial Shipping area of the business. This is largely in relation to ship structures and construction. With this in mind, we are after someone that can help shape the Production Engineering Capability to meet the current and future needs of our business and customers.
You will be involved in every stage of the design process of various types of specialised lightweight vessels. You will have the opportunity to influence designs and team processes to improve designs, build quality, and team efficiency.
Your day-to-day work will include technical project leadership, technical bid development, quality assurance of construction and outfit drawings, 3D vessel models, production deliveries, and bids. You will be involved with customer interaction and business development activities.
Line management is very much part of the role, and you will be looking after team resourcing, development, and training requirements.
Research and development is also at the heart of what we do, and you will have the opportunity to drive and support the development of future design concepts as well as the development of new capabilities, tools, and processes.
Marine vessels represent some of the most complex manufactured assets in the world and as such provide interesting, challenging, and rewarding work for the people that design, build, and support them through life. As an Engineering Manager within our Marine Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in projects across the lifecycle of vessels and our wider portfolio. This includes working with the wider business functions to support the development of opportunities and foster customer relationships for both our UK and international customers.
The majority of people within the Capability are based in the Fareham area; however, the capability is part of the UK and Europe region so a balance of in-office, remote, and hybrid working will be considered (we also have offices in Glasgow, Plymouth, Bristol, and Bath). Travel to other BMT offices and customer sites will be necessary as and when required (occasional overseas travel may be required).
This is a full-time predominantly fee-earning role.
About you
Candidates will be registered as a Chartered Engineer with an appropriate professional body or be able to demonstrate the ability to achieve Chartered status in the short term.
You will have demonstrable experience of working in the maritime domain, in particular within the area of ship structural Production Engineering/Detailed Design.
Experience in different hull form types of vessels, use of a variety of construction materials, optimising design for buildability, weight reduction, operation, whole vessel design, various Classification/Code/Flag regulations, outfitting, and mechanical arrangement is fundamental to the role; having an understanding of ship/shipyard construction methods, in particular with aluminium vessels (typically 15-70m length) is considered essential.
You will have knowledge/skills in 2D and 3D CAD software and be able to produce and quality assure both CAD and drawing outputs.
You will have the ability to communicate and act with integrity with all levels of the business and with customers, promoting a lessons-learned culture and contributing to business success through considered decision-making and influencing the employee engagement agenda.
Leading development of others, promoting respect, trust and openness, well-being and safety, collaboration, and recognising diversity in our people and teams is key to maintaining our culture.
Experience or an understanding of working across the entire platform lifecycle, from concept development through to in-service support and disposal is desirable.

BMT is passionate about people; we recognise that technology moves quickly and that no one can learn everything, which is why we seek those who can adapt and demonstrate the aptitude to learn.
