Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant General Paediatrician on a 12 months fixed term basis to cover maternity leave from April 2025. This is a full time post with acute duties based at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Hospital in Cramlington and clinics at Wansbeck and North Tyneside General Hospitals.
The successful candidate will have expertise in General Paediatrics and will provide consultant cover for children in our paediatric emergency department, short stay children’s ward and level 1 SCBU. Expertise and training in the management of injuries is not essential as the unit is supported by Emergency Care Consultants from the main Emergency Department next door.
You will work alongside other consultant paediatricians and participate in the training of junior doctors and paediatric and neonatal nurse practitioners in the department. When not consultant of the week you will have regular clinics at either Wansbeck or North Tyneside General Hospital.
The post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week which includes some on-site working in the evenings and at weekends. There is an overnight on call commitment of 1 in 9 nights but no overnight resident duties.
The post will be flexibly time-tabled to meet the demands of the service and the timing of sessions may change as the service develops. Full and part time applications are welcome, and the content of the job will be agreed with individual candidates.
The Job Plan will typically include an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities for Direct Clinical Care duties and 1.5 Programmed Activities for Supporting Professional Activities (if full time). As 2PAs are allocated for out of hours working there will be one non-working day each week. A proposed job plan has been outlined in Appendix 4 of the Job Description and will be agreed on commencement of appointment.
We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, covering one of the largest geographical areas of any NHS trust in the country.
