Job summary
Do you want to develop your career in theatres; attain a Bachelor of Science Degree and become a qualified Operating Department Practitioner, all whilst being paid? Come and join our theatre department as a trainee ODP and enjoy the support of a dedicated team whilst training.
We are seeking committed, enthusiastic, compassionate, and caring individuals who have a passion for theatres to join our apprenticeship Trainee ODP program. This is a three-year apprenticeship which includes clinical placements in a variety of clinical settings as well as academic study in the University setting.
On successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will be able to register as an ODP with the HCPC, and then apply for a Band 5 position within our Theatre or IR departments.
You will need to work full time for the duration of the program and will do your training across more than one site. You will also be expected to undertake study in your own time.
You will learn all aspects of peri-operative care, and become proficient in the anaesthetic, scrub and recovery area within the scope of an ODP.
All successful candidates will need to submit an online application to BCU within a set timeframe to be accepted onto the course. As part of the process, you must also complete your care certificate within the first 3 months if not already done so.

Qualifications
Applicants must demonstrate and provide physical certificate which demonstrates the entry requirements to be accepted onto the agreed provider Universities programme.
Essential Qualifications/ Certificates at Level 2:
1. A minimum of 3 GCSE's at Grade 4 or above (formerly C) which must include English Language, Maths, and a science or equivalent.
2. Acceptable GCSE Equivalents for science: BTEC extended certificate in science or applied science Level 2, BTEC diploma in science or applied science Level 2, Intermediate GNVQ.
3. Acceptable GCSE Equivalents for English: Functional Skills English Level 2.
4. Acceptable GCSE Equivalents for Maths: Functional Skills Maths Level 2.
Plus, one of the following Level 3 qualifications, access course, or 112 UCAS points.
Experience
1. Ability to work effectively as a team player under appropriate supervision, and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
2. Can demonstrate experience and insight into how to evaluate own strengths & development needs, seeking advice where appropriate.
3. Ability to deal with non-routine and unpredictable nature of the workload.
4. Understanding of the scope of the role of the Operating Department Practitioner in context of the care delivery team.
5. Can demonstrate an understanding of a range of skills/procedures and care that may be undertaken by an Operating Department Practitioner.
6. Understands the Trust Values and can relate them to this role.
Additional Criteria
1. Evidence of time management skills and ability to prioritise and can articulate how they will study & work at the same time.
2. Ability to communicate with members of the public and health and care providers.
3. Can demonstrate an understanding of the range of shift patterns worked in health care.
4. Ability to move between Trust sites working across health as required by the needs of the development programme.
5. Ability to work on own initiative.
6. Can demonstrate compassion through example.
7. Punctual & good timekeeping.
