The school
Ipswich School has been listed as one of the top 100 schools in the country and is one of the foremost independent schools in East Anglia. Established prior to 1399, we moved to our present site in 1852 and have over 1080 pupils aged between 3 months and 19 years.
The school operates a 5-day week, with representative sports played during the week and on Saturdays.
In this role, you may be asked to work in the Senior School or the Prep School.
Role
You will assist with a variety of duties, covering for absent colleagues or providing extra help at busy times in our Catering team. You will follow daily routines and our cleaning schedule.
Principal duties:
* wash all kitchen tins and utensils in hot, soapy water and rinse well
* help lay up the dining room for lunch service as required
* help prepare the dishwasher room ready for operation
* check that all cutlery and crockery is clean before returning to the servery
* be polite and helpful to customers at all times
* adhere to C.O.S.H.H. regulations when using chemicals, always use protective wear
* report any damaged or broken equipment to the Catering Manager
* work in a safe manner that does not endanger other employees
* ensure after service that the daily cleaning schedule is carried out, and that work areas are left clean and tidy
* help prepare and serve sports teas, and/or provide catering support for school events and functions
* wear the uniform/personal protective clothing issued as directed by the Catering Manager
* jewellery should not be worn
* adhere to responsibilities under the school’s Health, Safety and Welfare Policy
* only use chemicals that are in the correct bottles, and ensure they are used correctly
* attend basic hygiene and safeguarding children training as required.

You should have the following attributes:
* good inter-personal and team working skills
* reliability and punctuality
* flexibility to provide cover at short notice.
Hours of work, pay and benefits:
* this is a casual position (there are no set/contracted hours of work)
* the hours of work will be as required to cover absent colleagues during term time and busy periods, or at weekends/evenings for sports fixtures and events
* cleaning work may also be required on the days prior to the beginning of each term and after the end of each term
* the hourly rate of pay for the post is currently £11.44 per hour (the National Living Wage), increasing to £12.21 per hour in April 2025
* holiday pay is calculated periodically and is based on the number of hours worked
* authorised time sheets should be submitted regularly and payment is made monthly in arrears
* staff can use the school’s swimming pool and fitness gym (in compliance with appropriate rules)
* after 3 months’ service, you will be entitled to join a defined contribution pension scheme.
