About newcleo
Since launching in 2021, newcleo has quickly established itself as an innovator in the field of nuclear energy. newcleo is working to design, build, and operate Gen-IV Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs) that are cooled by liquid lead and fueled by reprocessed nuclear waste.
Through an innovative combination of existing and proven technologies, and by reviving a nuclear industry model based on the manufacture and multi-recycling of Mixed Oxide fuel, newcleo aims to close the nuclear fuel cycle while safely producing clean, affordable, and practically inexhaustible energy required for low carbon economies.
With a EUR 50m group turnover in 2024, more than EUR 400m of private funding, and over 70 partnerships and collaborations across the nuclear industry, the growth of the newcleo group is supported through the targeted acquisition of key companies with strong capabilities in nuclear engineering, manufacturing, and waste management.
Through its workforce of over 800 highly qualified employees across France, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, and Slovakia, newcleo is not only developing and delivering the skills and services required for the group’s own ambitious project timelines but also supporting the development of Small Modular Reactor supply chains in Europe and beyond.
Overview of the role:
newcleo is driving forwards an exciting and challenging international programme to develop and deploy our innovative Lead-cooled Fast Reactor technology, with an initial focus on France and the UK. As part of LFR design development and deployment planning, we are seeking a skilled Plant Commissioning and Operations Specialist to join our project delivery team.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the development of robust commissioning and operating (from a maintenance and engineering perspective) strategies, plans, and procedures that align with project objectives, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the deployment of innovative nuclear technology with a focus on safety, reliability, and efficiency. The focus of the role is commissioning, but an understanding of plant operations, from the point of view of maintenance (including plant outages) and engineering would be extremely beneficial.
The successful candidate will have direct experience in commissioning and/or operations and maintenance of power plants, nuclear facilities, or large industrial facilities within a highly regulated environment (likely from an owner/operating or supplier/contracting organisation). Direct experience in the nuclear sector (nuclear new build, nuclear plant maintenance/outage, nuclear defence, nuclear decommissioning) would be desirable but not essential; however, the ability to bring translatable experience from highly regulated industries is required.
As newcleo is a start-up company, the role will require a hands-on proactive approach, and the individual must be comfortable with early-stage programmes. They must have the ability to work with ambiguity and change whilst establishing a clear path towards successful project delivery. The role provides the opportunity for an individual to expand their capability and experience as the programme grows from its early definition through to multi £billion delivery across multiple countries.
Reporting to our Head of Pre-Construction and MMC, the core duties & areas the role will cover include:
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to help define and document commissioning and operations objectives, scope, and success criteria for the LFR200.
* Working with other commissioning professionals in the organisation to develop comprehensive commissioning strategies that integrate seamlessly with the design and planning phases.
* Ensure commissioning strategies comply with applicable nuclear regulatory and safety standards.
* Coordinate with engineering teams to ensure the integration of commissioning and operations requirements into system designs.
* Provide commissioning and plant operations (maintenance and engineering) focused feedback during the design phase to ensure operability, maintainability, and testability of systems.
* Help to prepare detailed commissioning plans, schedules, and workflows that align with project milestones and timelines.
* Contribute to the development of commissioning and operations/maintenance processes and procedures.
* Identify potential commissioning risks or challenges and propose design optimisations to mitigate them.
* Collaborate with suppliers, contractors, and internal teams to establish clear commissioning roles and responsibilities.
Full duties & responsibilities are available on request.
The role can be based in our London, Manchester, or Gloucester offices, where we have a hybrid & flexible working policy of 3 days per week in the office. Regular business travel will be required to our offices in Italy and France, to collaborate and build strong working relationships within our Global Engineering, Safety and Quality Teams.
The role will also offer ongoing opportunities for growth & development depending on your career motivations, and is a key position for us to achieve our project success.
Is this role right for you?
We would like to speak to people who have:
* Relevant industry experience (sectors such as nuclear/energy, oil and gas, process and petro-chem industries), with experience of working on complex multi £m (£50m+) projects/programmes within a highly regulated environment. International experience would be beneficial, but not essential.
* Demonstrable experience in commissioning and/or operations and maintenance of power plants, nuclear facilities, or large industrial facilities. Direct experience from the nuclear sector (nuclear new build, nuclear defence, nuclear decommissioning) would be desirable but not essential; however, the ability to translate experience from highly regulated industries is required.
* Experience in commissioning and/or operations and maintenance planning and execution during early project phases.
* Strong technical knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, and Control systems.
* The ability to influence the engineering design, construction, and commissioning methodologies to support the optimum delivery schedule.
Please note if you meet some but not all of the requirements above, we would still be really keen to hear from you!
