Role Purpose
As Head of Nutrition, you will provide expert leadership in the planning, implementation and evaluation of nutritional strategy across the organisation. You will ensure our services are compliant with current legislation and best practice, support innovation in menu development, and promote health and wellbeing through food. You will lead the development of nutritional standards and policies, manage allergen and special diet processes, and work collaboratively across teams to support the business's commercial and social goals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Nutritional Strategy & Leadership
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for all nutrition-related activities and policies.
- Act as the subject matter expert for nutrition and dietary requirements, ensuring alignment with government guidelines and company values.
- Lead on nutritional aspects of bids, tenders, and client communications.
2. Allergen & Special Diet Management
- Oversee the development and implementation of robust allergen and special diet procedures across all sectors.
- Serve as a key contact between clients, schools, parents and internal teams for managing complex dietary needs.
- Ensure accurate and transparent allergen information is maintained and communicated across platforms.
3. Menu Development & Compliance
- Lead on the creation of nutritionally balanced menus in collaboration with culinary teams, ensuring compliance with nutritional standards and cost-effectiveness.
- Oversee the implementation and administration of menus via internal systems (e.g. menu management software).
- Work closely with Procurement to ensure listed products support the nutritional and ethical goals of the organisation.
- Provide expert input during audits or reviews of food service operations, ensuring alignment with nutritional, food safety, and quality standards.
4. Risk & Compliance Management
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations related to nutrition, allergens and food labelling.
- Lead or support investigations into allergen-related incidents, identifying root causes and implementing preventative measures.
- Monitor emerging legislation and public health guidance to future-proof business practices.
5. Health Promotion & Added Value
- Champion healthy eating and wellbeing initiatives across the business.
- Lead on educational campaigns and food-based programmes to encourage positive behaviour change, particularly in schools and care settings.
- Support the achievement and retention of external accreditations (e.g. Food for Life).
Person Specification
Essential:
- Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or a related field.
- Significant experience in a nutrition-related role within the catering or foodservice sector.
- Strong leadership and influencing skills.
- Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
- In-depth knowledge of UK nutritional standards, food allergies and intolerances, and menu compliance.
- Ability to work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams.
- Passion for improving health and wellbeing through food.
- Competent in data analysis, reporting and using digital menu/allergen systems.
