Microbiological Supervisor - Pennybridge Key Responsibilities Duties will include: Responsible for the day to day running of the laboratory facility and responsible for supervision of other members of staff directly reporting to the Lab Supervisor (allocating tasks, rotas and annual leave) Ensuring that the laboratory operates effectively to comply with all relevant: Certification/accreditation standards. Laboratory procedures and group policies. Customer specifications. Work with the laboratory management team to establish the laboratorys Quality Management System (QMS) and assist in the implementation and successful day to day operation of such to maintain quality laboratory practice standards. Responsible for quality and regulatory compliance of work undertaken. Be accountable for achieving Turnaround Time (TAT) targets as essential Key Performance Indicators. Complete and maintain records / paperwork within the laboratory QMS. Maintain direct and adequate communication with management regarding laboratory operations. Ensure a high standard of housekeeping & hygiene are continuously maintained in the laboratory in line with GLP and environmental standards. Responsible for the correct management of laboratory equipment and working alongside the laboratory engineer to schedule any internal maintenance and calibrations, arranging for equipment to be calibrated and/or serviced by external companies as and when required. Update and write laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions (WI) when required. Oversee continuous process and service improvements and work with the management team in proposing and implementing new strategies and technologies to enhance operational efficiency. Play a leading role in the laboratorys quality assurance programs, including audit preparation and assisting in hosting audits as needed. Help establish and maintain a high level of health and safety in the laboratory. Arranging and storing chemical substances and fluids according to the safety instructions. Ordering and maintaining an appropriate level of stock and critical spares for laboratory consumables. Assist with staff training on new equipment and systems. Liaise with both internal and external customers and suppliers. Other reasonable duties as required. Performance KPIs Accreditation rating Sample Turnaround Time. Budget & cost control / reduction. Customer complaint levels Essential Criteria Applicants should possess a BSc or equivalent in science (preferably in food science or technology) gained on a course that includes practical laboratory work, or 5 years of relevant laboratory experience. Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory accreditation standards, particularly ISO 17025, Campden Laboratory Approval Scheme & Campden Retailer Supplementary Audit and experience maintaining compliance with these and other regulatory requirements. A strong understanding of the importance of accurate record keeping within a strictly controlled quality system is essential. Maintains an infallible degree of discretion, integrity, and confidentiality. Strong communication skills verbal, written and computerised. Resourceful and able to work to deadlines with accuracy and good attention to detail. Highly organised and be able to work independently as well as working in a team. Desirable Criteria Previous supervisory or management experience in a laboratory setting including training staff. Proven leadership skills, with the ability to mentor, motivate, and guide a team towards achieving excellence in laboratory operations. Certified internal auditor with a proven record of completing internal audits.
