About the role
We are seeking a Structural Engineer experienced in using digital tools to join an exciting, growing team!
The role will be responsible for applying Python programming and Parametric Design (Rhino/Grasshopper) to a variety of building projects, specifically utilising laser-cut steel.
The job will involve using and developing in-house tools to design structurally optimised steel and reinforced concrete building components, verified using Eurocode 2/3, experimental testing, and finite element modelling.
An emphasis is on using laser-cut digital fabrication to create new types of structurally efficient solutions that have reduced embodied carbon.
You will be Responsible for:
1. Concept to detail engineering design stages of buildings and their structural elements. Using and developing in-house design, modelling, and analysis tools (Grasshopper/Python).
2. Writing standard Eurocode-compliant hand calcs and embedding design code checks in the workflow.
3. Producing CAD models in Rhinoceros, preparing and exporting models for laser-cutting, considering assembly and cost.
4. Working with clients via meetings, workshops, and the design team, to solve problems. Providing updates on projects and their deliverables on a regular basis.
5. Liaise and work with the internal team of other mechanical/structural engineers and contract/business managers, and external parties such as experimental testing facilities and Universities.
6. Developing own knowledge and ability, a path to Chartership. Continuous improvement activities to support business growth.
7. Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes to continuously improve design practices and enhance construction efficiency.
8. Keeping senior management up to date on project status and progress.
Your Skills and Experience:
1. Qualified to MEng degree (or BEng and Masters) in Civil/Structural engineering.
2. Proven experience as a practising engineer would be a significant advantage.
3. Competent in applying a programming language to solve problems (ideally in Python).
4. Comfortable in using CAD software, with an emphasis on Parametric Modelling (Grasshopper/Dynamo).
5. Strong background in structural mechanics/analysis, working from first principles and using Eurocodes.
6. Can use finite element analysis to solve beam and shell models.
