About the Role
The Finance and Business Services function is looking to recruit a Power BI Report Writer to support the Open University’s Finance and Business Services team.
This is an exciting and dynamic role that is perfect for someone who is passionate about leveraging Power BI to drive financial insights and contribute to the success of a leading educational institution.
Key Responsibilities
The Power BI Report Writer plays a pivotal role within the Financial Accounting and Systems team, responsible for designing data models to convert raw data to meaningful insights. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with stakeholders across the university to understand their reporting needs and transform finance data into automated reports with the help of Power BI and other reporting tools. The key responsibilities are to develop Power BI reports to provide insights to improve self-service, efficiency and decision making.
Skills and Experience
Essential:
* Have knowledge of database fundamentals such as multidimensional database design, relational database design, and more.
* Be able to:
o quickly shape data into reporting and analytics solutions.
o produce professional dashboards and visual interactive reports using Power BI.
o analyse data and present it through reports that can help in decision-making.
o perform DAX queries and functions in Power BI.
o create charts and document data with algorithms, parameters, models, and relations explanations.
o use filters and graphs for a better understanding of the data.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
o Collaborate closely with stakeholders across the university to gather requirements and understand reporting needs.
o Work closely with cross-functional teams, including IT, Finance, CDO and other departments, to align reporting initiatives with organisational objectives.
o Financial analysis skills to gather and interpret requirements from various stakeholders with the ability to bring user reporting requirements to life.
* Design and develop interactive and visually appealing reports using Power BI, ensuring data accuracy and relevance.
o Create and maintain data models that support various reporting requirements and integrate data from multiple sources into Power BI.
o Develop clear and meaningful data visualisations that facilitate effective analysis and decision-making.
o Apply best practices in data visualisation to present data in an understandable and insightful manner.
o Ability to carry out data reconciliation activities with ease and accuracy.
* Ensure data integrity and quality in the reports by validating and verifying data sources, transformations, and calculations.
o Adhere to data governance standards and guidelines to maintain consistent and accurate reporting.
* Ability to be flexible and work analytically in a problem-solving environment, address user queries and troubleshoot issues related to reports and dashboards.
o Ability to optimise and troubleshoot the performance of Power BI.
* Familiarity with Power BI releases and features roadmap.
Desirable:
* Familiarity with financial reporting processes and standards.
* An experienced Power BI Advocate, with a strong technical understanding of Power BI reporting and planning tools best practices.
* Evidence of writing Power BI reports within a higher education context.
* Relevant certifications in Power BI or related areas are advantageous.
* Good understanding of Power BI data structures, end-to-end dataflow, Power BI predictive capabilities, augmented analytics, forecasting, etc.
* Understanding of SAP Finance Products including S4 Hana, BPC and Payroll as these are core systems within Finance and Business Services function including some knowledge of SAP analytics cloud.

Work location: It is anticipated that a hybrid working pattern can be adopted for this role, where you can work from home and the office. However, as this role is contractually aligned to our Milton Keynes office it is expected that some attendance in the office will be required when necessary and in response to business needs. We’d expect this to be at least once per week (Tuesday).
