Overview of School
specialist school for children and young people with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.
Children aged nine to sixteen who have Special Educational Needs (SEN) We provide education for up to 84 children and young people with EHC plans on a non-residential basis.
Overview of Role
To fulfil the role of a Learning, Development and Aspiration Mentor, focussing primarily on removing barriers to learning for all pupils across the school. Ensure all children are resilient learners who feel happy, safe and make progress in the school environment. To assist in the support, education, integration, and development of independence of pupils and ensure pupils retain access to high quality first teaching. To contribute to recording and reporting of individual student progress towards targets set. To assist across the school in creating the right ‘climate’ for all pupils to maximise their achievements across the spectrum of school life.
Responsibilities
• Support the development of independent learning skills by helping pupils develop ownership of tasks.
• Support pupils working independently from their teaching group – e.g. supervision, collection of work, providing guidance with the task, ensure completed work is returned to staff.
• To aid pupils to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on their own.
• To establish a positive relationship with pupils.
• To encourage acceptance and integration of pupils with complex needs.
• To develop methods of promoting/reinforcing student’s self-esteem.
• To facilitate and actively encourage independent communication with peers.
• To actively encourage student’s independence and self-reliance.
• To support specific pupils with reading, writing, explaining, organising, encouraging, self-control etc.
• To support children on school trips.
• Follow up student/staff concerns, making telephone and written contact with parents as appropriate.
• Follow up safeguarding issues in line with school policy and practice.
• Take part in student pursuits and activities to develop a better understanding of how pupils respond to different approaches.
• Meet with teaching and support staff regarding individual or small groups of pupils.
• Meet with teaching staff that are being supported for lesson preparation and feedback.
• Record on the management information system student successes and incidents of inappropriate behaviour.
• Use the school management information system to access and input data.
Requirements
Qualifications and training - GCSE English & Maths or equivalent.
Experience- Experience working in a school, or with children in an equivalent role, Ability to use IT to communicate via email, Experience of using different electronic systems to support the needs of the organisation.
Knowledge- Understand how communicate effectively with colleagues and young people, understanding how to support people to learn, Knowledge of the importance of Safeguarding/health and safety, confidentiality and data protection.
