This is an opportunity for an Orthoptist to join our eye care team in a busy, supportive department based at Queen's Medical Centre campus. The department is forward-thinking, progressive, and has a great reputation for student clinical placements. The Orthoptic department has a varied caseload; the post holder will participate in paediatric and adult ocular motility clinics and the assessment of patients referred from eye casualty. The department is a clinical placement centre for orthoptic undergraduates, optometrists, medical students, postgraduate medics, and other health professionals, and the post holder would be expected to contribute to this clinical teaching role.
The orthoptic department has an established preceptorship/clinical supervision programme for new graduates and new staff to the team. A Diploma/Degree in Orthoptics plus HCPC registration is required.
Main duties of the job
1. Participate in the delivery of care across all elements of the service including paediatric and adult orthoptics, new patient orthoptic/optometry clinics, paediatric ophthalmology, adult squint, and neuro-ophthalmology.
2. Provide orthoptic expertise for patients referred from eye casualty and from other specialties such as maxillofacial, neurology, stroke, and paediatrics.
3. Work flexibly to support the needs of the service, this may include supporting the visual fields service and training for additional roles.
4. Demonstrate a good team working ethic in delivering holistic patient care.
5. Use time management and organisational skills to ensure smooth running of the individual clinics and wider service.
6. Provide a high standard of clinical teaching to a wide range of healthcare professionals.
7. Demonstrate the skills of reflective practice and ensure key learning is shared and CPD is achieved.
8. Participate in self-audit and contribute to departmental audit and research.
About us
The successful candidate will be working with the multidisciplinary team in the Ophthalmology Department comprising of Orthoptists, Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Technicians, OSPs, the nursing and admin teams.
Ophthalmology Services include eye casualty, day case, in-patient, and outpatient facilities. It has strong links to the University of Nottingham through research and works closely with the regional Diabetic Eye Screening Service. We have a large team of Consultant Ophthalmologists who provide outpatient and surgical services in a full range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics.
The post holder will be required to work various shifts to support the needs of the service. This includes working weekdays, weekends, bank holiday days, and varying hours with the earliest start time at 7.00am and the latest finish at 8.00pm. You are strongly urged to consider your suitability to meet the service requirements prior to applying for this post. Typical rota is one late clinic/week and one Saturday/month.

As a Specialist Orthoptist, maintain the delivery of a high standard of clinical work within all aspects of the orthoptic practice and clinical teaching. Work as an autonomous practitioner in undertaking orthoptic assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients of all ages, ranging from pre-term babies to the elderly and who have various communication abilities and who have been referred from a variety of sources. Take responsibility for an individual caseload of orthoptic patients with complex presentations and needs and provide specialist advice to other health professionals regarding patient management. Participate in the theoretical and clinical teaching of orthoptics to orthoptic undergraduates on placement in the department. Participate in the theoretical and clinical teaching of orthoptics to medical students, ophthalmic nurses, optometrists, and other health professionals visiting the orthoptic department each week. Maintain and enhance professional knowledge and skills required to practice as an orthoptist and keep a personal professional development portfolio.
