Technical Manager – Maritime UK Based

Pending contract award, our Serco maritime division have an exciting new role for a Technical Manager to join our team. The key purpose of this role is to lead on the Ship Life Extension Plan management team with responsibility for the oversight and management of the upcoming Programmes (SLEPs) achieving customer approved technical solutions for the programme on time and budget.
Working with the Project Manager, and sometimes interchangeably, you will ensure a consistently safe and effective engineering works package is being managed and reported by our subcontract partners Shipyard facilities. Responsible for an effective Ship Life Extension Programme (SLEP) across a fleet of vessels improving the reliability of vessels and allowing the continued services of vessels while minimising loss of operational availability until replacement vessels enter service. The SLEP will integrate major scheduled maintenance tasks, in-depth system overhauls and replacements, to extend the safe operational capability of a vessel.
Serco as a Prime Contractor will coordinate the programme management & customer liaison elements throughout the circa 14-18month contract, working with the two selected shipyards delivering the SLEP activities. The Technical Manager is the senior engineering lead that forms part of the Management Team, assuring the Serco Maritime Director and the Customer Representative on all matters related to the progress and completion of SLEPs activities.
Main Accountabilities:
- To be the lead technical POC ensuring risks issues and opportunities are communicated, mitigated and acted upon in a timely and effective manner.
- Provide assurance to the Customer and Maritime Services Director that all activities are undertaken in a safe environment and are fully compliant with MCA, Class, Health and Safety, ISM & ISPS codes and any other legal requirements that may be applicable to the Programme at all times.
- Promoting and fostering good working relationships with all Border Force, Shipyard and Internal stakeholders.
- Monitoring and control of expenditure against delegated budgets and timely reporting of anticipated variances.
- Seeking and promoting opportunities for efficiencies without detriment to safety or levels of service.
- Providing guidance to Shipyard SMEs and customer overseeing officers (particularly the BFOO) when appropriate
- Exemplifying and promoting ethical behaviours and acting as an ambassador for Serco Maritime with all external personnel.
What you’ll need to do the role
- Naval Architect, Vessel Build or Maritime Surveying experience or STCW III/I or III/II recognised Marine Engineering Qualification
- Degree level education in a relevant discipline
- Significant project management experience in a maritime environment
- In depth knowledge and experience of engineering and technical best practice and processes.
- Financial and Commercial acumen in a maritime technical context.
- Thorough knowledge and experience of Class and Flag Authorities and regulations.
- Experience and competence with IT systems and office applications particularly word, excel, Sharepoint and preferably MS Project.
- Driving License essential
- Must be content with regular travel to Holyhead and Lymington.
- SC Security Cleared or ability to obtain the required clearance
