An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse on Princess Elizabeth Ward.
The Children's Surgical Ward is a 21 bedded unit, with 11 beds (Princess Elizabeth) allocated for surgical patients and 10 beds (Lion Ward) for neurosurgical or neuro-rehabilitation patients.
You must be a Registered Children’s Nurse with excellent clinical skills, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and committed to providing high standards of care for all our paediatric patients, their families, and carers. The ability to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills is essential. You should have time-management and clinical organisational skills.
The post holder will be responsible for maintaining standards and quality in the day-to-day management of the unit. This role will enable you to gain and demonstrate skills in leadership and people management within the clinical environment. Your primary responsibilities will be to regularly take charge of the unit and support and develop junior staff by being a mentor and role model.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Practice
• Assist in the delivery of an expert nursing service for people with specialist needs.
• Provide expert nursing advice and support to patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis and through treatment.
• Ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence-based nursing care, assessing health, health-related, and nursing needs of patients, their families, and other carers.
• Manage own patient caseload.
• Actively involve in-patient care, liaising with ward staff to ensure high-quality nursing care.
• Assist in the delivery of a seamless service through Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) processes and communication.
• Be aware of the process of operational policy review annually in accordance with national standards.
• Ensure care is given in accordance with agreed protocols.
• Follow-up patients under supervision as appropriate and ensure all relevant information is available to enable patients to make informed choices about their treatment.
• Liaise with the ward staff to ensure appropriate and timely discharge/follow-up arrangements are in place for patients.
• Adhere to the mechanisms for MDT referrals to the Clinical Nurse Specialists.
Specialists
• Liaise with local community, social services, paramedics, and voluntary organisations regarding current service availability.
• Actively involve service users in providing feedback on their experience of the current service and suggestions for improvements.
• Participate in the development of appropriate patient group directives to facilitate/enhance the discharge process.
• Participate in relevant forums at Care Group or Trust Level to represent the service perspective.
• Act as a resource person to others, providing accurate information, advice, and support to the multidisciplinary team, patients, and their relatives.
• Provide appropriate information and educational literature to assist patients/carers in making informed choices as to their treatment plan and continuing management.
Education and Research
• Participate in programmes of education and training to meet the identified needs of clients, carers, and others involved in their care.
• Actively participate in educational events provided by the Trust and Primary Care sector.
• Attend meetings and conferences as appropriate, ensuring that you are fully conversant with current issues within the Trust and nationally.
• Participate in clinical audits within the Trust as directed.
• Participate in any appropriate/relevant Trust-approved research projects conducted within the department.
• Be aware of and actively apply nursing research and evidence-based practice relevant to the specialty.
• Work with other staff in clinical areas where changes to practice are required, and where opportunities exist to improve treatment and support for patients.
Management
• Participate in any local change programmes to improve standards and communication links from Acute trust through to Primary Care.
• Keep updated on clinical and professional developments, attending training courses and appropriate updates.
• Work within the policies and guidelines set out by the Trust and Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice.
• Have responsibility for health, safety, and welfare of self in the working environment to follow safe working practices and comply at all times with the Trust’s Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
• Familiarise yourself with the Trust’s Risk Management procedures on reporting complaints, accidents, and incidents.
• Network with the team of clinical nurse specialists within the Trust to evaluate and promote the specialist-nursing role.
• Utilise and maintain information systems to aid audit and provide regular activity analysis reports.
• Maintain contemporaneous and accurate treatment records, submitting relevant statistics, reports, and activity data as requested.
• Contribute evaluation to the service in terms of clinical effectiveness, clinical excellence, and value for money.
• Maintain effective links within primary, secondary, and tertiary care to ensure effective communication.
• Ensure compliance with the Trust's Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trust's Race Equality Scheme and the Trust's duty to positively promote race equality and equality of opportunity for disabled people, ensuring services are responsive to the needs of equality groups.
