General Responsibilities
To act under the direction of the Operations Director to ensure the safe and economic operation of allocated vessels. In accordance with quality and safety management requirements, the Superintendent will monitor the safety and pollution prevention aspects and ensure that adequate resources and shore-based support are applied. Masters of such vessels will be directly responsible to the Superintendent.
Specific Responsibilities
To be responsible for assigned vessels in accordance with the company’s quality and safety management system policies to ensure that downtime time is minimised and that the vessels always perform in accordance with the terms of their respective contracts or charter parties.
To monitor and oversee vessels electronic planned maintenance system. To ensure planned tasks do not build up unchecked and with ships staff arrange timely interventions. Utilising the PMS as working tool and in conjunction with AMOS Administrator, oversee and administer ongoing work requests and effectively manage critical and normal maintenance administration.
To prepare maintenance, repair, spare gear, dry-docking, stores and lube oil budgets, together with monthly cash expenditure on all budgeted items and ensure that the monthly cumulative expenditure (actual and estimate) versus the relevant budgets is produced so that variances may be immediately identified. To visit, or arrange visits, to vessels on a regular basis to ensure that the laid down standards are maintained.
To ensure, in conjunction with the Crew Managers, that the vessels are always manned in accordance with their safe manning certificates and that additional crew members and/or traveling fitters are supplied as required by the maintenance/repair program. To monitor the appointment of Masters and Chief Engineers in conjunction with the Operations Director and Crew Managers.
To prepare, and ensure that crews carry out, the relevant planned maintenance schedules in accordance with Company policy and PM schedules.
To prepare repair and dry-docking specifications as necessary.
To approve all maintenance, repair, dry-docking and communication invoices in accordance with agreed authorisation levels, within timely receipt by the office.
To monitor vessels speed and consumption at sea and consumption in port, together with the efficient operation of the cargo gear, cargo and ballast pumps, inert gas system, and tank cleaning equipment, together with other deck and safety equipment.
To monitor vessels Class and trading certificates with the Marine Department, to ensure timely renewal and/or survey.
To compile and publish budgets for vessels in conjunction with the Operations Director and finance department and subsequently control to agreed parameters.
To carry out pre-purchase inspection of vessels as required and submit written reports within 5 working days of return to the office.
To authorise additions and/or deletions to the list of acceptable suppliers in conjunction with the Operations Director.
To keep abreast of technical developments and make suggestions regarding their application to the Operations Director.
To attend seminars and conferences as required.
Qualifications and Experience (Required)
* Qualified to at least Class II Certificate of Competency or suitable equivalent military qualification / rank and / or have a degree in a Marine Engineering related discipline.
* Experience and / or knowledge of technical management, knowledge of port and vessel operations, maintenance, Flag and Class requirements/regulations.
* Extensive experience as a sea-going Engineer – ideally 15 years marine experience.
* Detailed knowledge and experience of requirements covered by ISM.
* Ability to use Microsoft Office and AMOS software to a good standard, strong customer focus, organisational skills, time management, confidentiality and able to work on own initiative.
* Experience of successful people management and team development.
* Budgetary management experience.
