The Planned Investigation Unit (PIU) on the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) site is a busy nurse-led day-case unit that sees patients from a range of specialities. These include Neurology, Haematology, Rheumatology, Gastroenterology and many more, where a variety of specialist infusions and treatments are provided. The unit is currently open Monday-Friday 08:00-17:00 with the possibility of expansion of hours in the future.

Main duties of the job
* To support the day-to-day delivery of treatment within the nurse-led unit.
* Work as part of a team to provide an effective, safe environment of care for individual patients, their relatives and carers.

* Ensuring the nursing care delivered is of a high standard and within local and Trust guidelines.
Job responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
* Deliver, maintain and monitor within agreed standards of nursing care with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
* Demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of medical patients who require specialist treatment. The specialties include Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Haematology, Endocrine and other Medical specialties.
* Ensure that nursing care is patient focused and that patient dignity and privacy are maintained at all times.
* To become competent in the care and practice of Venesection.
* Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and colleagues and that equal opportunities are practiced.
* Takes a pro-active role in maintaining effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives.
* Takes responsibility for the clinical area.
* Able to assess the short-term needs of the clinical area and ensures that they are met. Will seek advice and support from outside the clinical area.
* Ensures that all clinical and legal nursing documents are completed accurately and legibly, and that junior staff understand their relevance.
* Use reflective practice as a method of ensuring that appropriate effective nursing care is delivered to each patient.
* Safely administer prescribed medications, and to monitor their effects.
* Ensure competency to use and safe maintenance of all medical devices within the sphere of responsibility.
* Reports incidents and near misses promptly and appropriately and takes remedial action to reduce the risk in the future.
* Whenever possible the post holder will attempt to resolve all complaints locally.
* Be able to competently provide clinical practice in - Venepuncture, intravenous cannulation, administers of intravenous additives.
* To instigate and order haematological and biochemical blood investigations, and recognise abnormal results.
* To be able to discharge patients under nurse led protocols.
* To be able to administer medications under Patient Group directives.
* To act as a clinical expert in the care of patients with chronic conditions which require long term therapy.
* To be able to participate in the counselling of patients receiving treatment / long term therapy.
* To ensure that audits and data is captured and presented to the clinical teams.
Person Specification
Education and Qualification
* Registered Nurse (RN1) with active NMC registration at time of starting appointment.
* Evidence of additional post registration training / courses in relevant field.
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience caring for patients in Rheumatology/ Gastroenterology/Haematology/Neurology/Dermatology/ elderly Medicine.
Skills and Competencies
* Ability to communicate effectively.
* Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members.
