Who we are
The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. We work to promote public confidence in the democratic process and ensure its integrity.
We focus on the issues that affect Wales and oversee all areas of work relating to electoral events that take place in Wales. This includes the annual household canvass of electors, elections to the Senedd, UK Parliament, Police and Crime Commissioner and local government elections.
The Electoral Commissions has a statutory duty to comply with the Welsh Language Standards, created in line with the Welsh Language Measure (2011). Welsh Translator – The Role:
The role is to provide a Welsh translation service for relevant material produced by teams across the Electoral Commission, ensuring that the Commission meets the commitments set out in its statutory Welsh Language Standards. The post holder will undertake the translation and proof reading of a range of official documents, including web content, communications assets, guidance, forms and technical reports.
Welsh Translator – Key Responsibilities:
As a translator you will play a key role in our small Welsh Language Unit. Some of your responsibilities will be to:
- Translate and proofread a wide range of corporate materials to a high standard, in line with the Commission’s corporate style guidelines and Support and advise colleagues across the Commission on developing Welsh language content in line with the Welsh language standards
- Input Welsh content onto our website using content management software
- Promote Welsh language awareness across the Commission, and assist in dealing with Welsh language queries internally
- Play a part in planning and prioritising translation working closely with Commission teams and directorates in other parts of the UK
- Become involved in other aspects of the Commission’s work in Wales and work with colleagues based across the UK. As an example, this could be developing bilingual communications materials, or working with external stakeholders and partners
Welsh Translator – You:
- Professionally qualified Welsh language translator educated to degree level in Welsh and/or significant experience of translating materials into Welsh in the workplace
Working as a Welsh translator in a busy corporate setting
- Proofing and editing material in Welsh, to corporate style
- Strong interpersonal and negotiating skills
- Excellent Welsh and English written communication skills, with ability to use plain language to communicate content in a clear style
- Ability to deal with customers and or/members of the public
- High level of IT literacy, to include Microsoft 365
