The scheme is for two years at our site in Wallsend, just a 20-minute drive from Newcastle upon Tyne. In your first year, you will spend time in several different departments learning the full life cycle of our product, and your second year will be focused on your development in our software engineering department.
The role is varied but suits those who are studying electrical and electronic or computer software engineering as the job role requires many of the skills and theory you will have learned. You will receive on-the-job training and will learn all about our subsea vehicles, handling systems, their associated power and control systems, and how to design them. The subsea vehicles are varied and include WCROVs, ploughs, trenchers and mining machines, all of which vary in size, power, functionality and complexity.
You will typically be involved in:
* Creation of PLC, HMI and SCADA programmes
* How to power and control each part of the machines (robotic arms, thrusters, drive tracks, hydraulic cylinders, motors, cameras, lights, positioning sensors, plus many more)
* Opportunities to factory test the subsea vehicles and associated surface equipment
* Opportunities to test the systems when installed on vessels
* Switchgear and control equipment
* Driving and controlling motors and the associated drive components
* Control theory such as Linear Systems & Engineering Maths
* Automation
* Measurement systems, sensors, and scientific instruments
* Electronic communications including serial (e.g. RS485, MODBUS) and Ethernet protocols
* Video and audio systems
* Working to safety and quality standards
* Working in a team and continuing to make SMD an inclusive and successful business
* Digital and analogue electronics
* Microprocessors and microcontrollers
* Embedded software languages (C, C++, Python etc.)
* IoT technology and machine intelligence
What skills and qualifications do I need?
* A minimum of upper 2nd class degree in electrical & electronics engineering or computer science.
* Be self-motivated and have an enthusiasm for engineering and innovation
* Problem solving and ability to work to tight timescales
* Good team player with excellent attention to detail
