About the Team
The Economic Secretary (EST) is the Treasury’s ‘City Minister’ covering a broad portfolio of financial services and stability policy, engaging with firms, regulators and consumers both domestically and internationally. The EST has oversight of the financial services and stability policy work that is undertaken in the department, which ranges from capital markets and listings to international financial services agreements. EST also deputises the Chancellor on various key policy issues such as the economic outlook.
The EST relies upon her Private Office to help her carry out her role and to work with the wider Treasury in driving forward the Minister’s policy agendas. The Office works with the Minister, to seek steers on policy decisions and provide private advice. It also organises other elements of the Minister’s workload including her diary, correspondence, engagement with Parliament and supporting her in handling her relationship with the Treasury.
The postholder will join a friendly and driven team of 8 (Private Secretary, four Assistant Private Secretaries a Diary Manager and two cross-office Registry Managers).
About the Job
In this role, you will:
1. Provide outstanding private secretary support to EST on complex, fast-paced and frequently high-profile issues, including by persuasively representing the minister’s view in the department; ensuring the Minister is well-briefed for meetings, external engagements and parliamentary appearances, and that meeting minutes and decisions are suitably recorded.
2. Drive forward effective policy making. Ensuring the EST receives consistently high quality, clear and well-balanced advice with which to advance the government’s priorities. Effectively communicating the Minister’s steers and priorities to officials and identifying and handling risks as they arise. Providing clear leadership and process direction across HM Treasury, including in time-pressured situations.
3. Lead the office on specific areas of the EST’s portfolio. These will depend on the interests of the Minister, postholder and the wider team.
4. Build excellent working relationships with key partners including senior HM Treasury officials, other ministerial offices in Treasury and other departments and external, including No10 and the private sector.
5. Line manage the Minister’s Diary Manager. Line management responsibility for the Executive Officer Diary Manager. Supporting the Diary Manager in their work and ensuring they have the opportunity to achieve their own goals and development opportunities.
6. Contribute flexibly to the day-to-day running of the office and help create a positive, supportive and friendly working environment which seeks to make EST’s office and HM Treasury a great place to work.

The successful candidate will:
* Have the ability to develop an excellent working relationship with the minister and work effectively with a range of partners, including officials across a range of grades.
* Be able to see issues and decisions in the context of the bigger strategic picture.
* Have strong communication and negotiation skills including an ability to communicate effectively with different audiences.
