Applications are invited for the position of a Diabetes and Endocrinology Consultant based at New Cross Hospital. This post is a full time substantive post.

Main duties of the job
1. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to provide a service in Diabetes and Endocrinology with responsibility for provision and development of all aspects and modalities within diabetes services and to collaborate across all disciplines including primary care, where appropriate, to achieve an integrated service for patients.
2. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the out-of-hours On-Call service for the department. This includes being on-call for telephone advice and major incidents.
3. To provide cover for Consultant and Senior colleagues in respect of periods of leave.
4. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take part in medical audit, quality improvement and research as appropriate.
5. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
6. To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.

Job responsibilities
Role is based on a 10 PA job plan. Specific details of an individual timetable will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate in keeping with an agreed job plan. A normal clinical session would have between 510 clinic slots, dependent on the clinic type.
Acute medical on call cover is 1:8 firm based and is for approx. 1 day per month. This involves being the medical receiving consultant for new admissions in ED & AMU for a 24 hour period. One is expected to be physically present in the hospital from 8am to 10pm on those days, post taking patients on the unit. The post take ward round for the patients admitted overnight is undertaken by the AMU consultants.
Ward cover is undertaken on a rotational basis covering the three ward areas mentioned before. There is middle grade support available for the two larger wards for the morning ward round. Junior doctor team consists of doctors derived from multiple training levels and usually includes the following:
Foundation Year 1 5 trainees Foundation year 2- 2 trainees IMT various levels 3 trainees ST trainees (ST3-7)- 3 trainees (recently increased from 2 posts) Clinical Fellowship (various levels)- 6-7 CF trainees and 5-6 Senior CF trainees CESR Fellows- Currently 2 posts supported from within the CF cadre.
There are generally minimal outpatient clinic commitments when on the ward and one of the three ward consultants (covering C17) will cover Outreach and referrals for that week including reading external referrals via the DOCMAN system and doing outreach ward rounds (Mon/Wed/Fri PM) with the dedicated outreach middle grade and/or DSN. There are no clinics usually booked in for the consultant covering outreach and C17 ward.
