Design Engineer - PDD This is an exciting opportunity to join the Brompton New Product Development team to help define the Brompton of tomorrow. Taking full ownership of projects from initial brief all the way through to mass manufacture and implementation onto the bike. Using knowledge of mass manufacturing techniques and working closely with the cross functional team to execute projects quickly and efficiently. Key Responsibilities: Bring concepts to life though fast paced product development, using sketching, hand modelling, CAD and prototyping. Present design concepts to key stakeholders for regular design reviews. Innovatively applying proven mass production principles into components and accessories that delight our customers. Create, manage, and nurture the relation between Brompton and assigned suppliers with great focus on quality and sustainability requirements. Create design data including: 3D CAD modelling using SolidWorks. 2D critical dimension drawings including relevant use of GD&T 2D and 3D prototyping (using internal and external resources) Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively with both your immediate team and the wider company. Agree the mechanical, aesthetic, and ergonomic approach with the wider design team – then deliver this using the most relevant manufacturing technology, always keeping our customers at the heart of everything we do. Generate and maintain bills of materials. Create specifications and design verification plans based on project requirements. Throughout your role you will also liaise with: Industrial Design to develop the design aesthetic to meet the Brompton visual design standards and define product CMF. Structural and Reliability Engineers to ensure detailed validation of the FEA is in-line with Brompton’s standards. The procurement team to ensure design concepts meet the financial targets set out for the projects. Production engineering to ensure designs are efficient for manufacture and meet the capabilities of our suppliers and the internal production team. Quality to help generate inspection plans in line with the critical design requirements. Third party suppliers to liaise on DFM and obtain initial part and tooling quotations. Marketing, Sales and Product Management to ensure they are informed and consulted on the designs as they develop – ensuring that product development is aligned with the needs of our customers. Who you are: We are looking for a proactive, creative and detail focussed design engineer with a proven track record of taking concepts through to mass manufacturable products. You will be working in an industry leading, cross-functional team encompassing Product Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Structural Analysis, Production Engineering, Prototyping and Reliability. In this role, you'll be part of a close-knit team where collaboration and initiative are key. Once you’ve found your feet, the ideal candidate should be ready to support team members as needed and take ownership of projects, demonstrating a proactive approach and a willingness to go above and beyond, without the need of constant input from programme management. Desired Experience: Portfolio demonstrating experience in product design, including proven experience of part and assembly ownership from concept through to validation and mass production. Experience in a similar role ideally working withing the consumer product industry. High level of CAD ability covering solid and advanced surfacing techniques. Preferably SolidWorks. Ability and propensity to work independently with suppliers, establishing and managing relationships with a strong focus on cost, quality, and design for manufacturing. The ideal candidate must demonstrate great independence and the ability to take ownership of supplier management tasks without requiring continuous support from procurement. The ideal candidate must be decisive, capable of determining the best course of action, and able to articulate the rationale behind their preferred direction, rather than merely exploring alternatives and deferring decisions to others. Previous line management experience would be a benefit Proven ability to produce designs to specified lead times and costs.
