Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic Operating Department Practitioner or Nurse who are passionate about delivering outstanding surgical care. We are a hard-working and enthusiastic department with a strong sense of teamwork.
The successful applicant will have the motivation, vision and leadership qualities necessary to lead a successful theatre team and will be expected to use those skills to coordinate the department, working within a flexible working pattern to meet the needs of the service. You will be expected to deputise for Clinical Operations Manager as required. The applicant will be an experienced orthopaedic scrub practitioner who is proactive, self-motivated, has strong interpersonal skills and a vision for service improvement.
Main duties of the job
1. Liaise with the theatre coordinator to ensure that patients are prepared for theatre in reasonable time and are received in to the theatre department adhering to the concepts laid out by the 8 Steps to Safer Surgery and the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
2. Assist in the safe handling, transfer and positioning of patients.
3. Provide skilled assistance when participating in scrub/anaesthetic and circulating duties in the Trauma and Orthopaedic operating theatre.
4. Liaise and communicate with other departments e.g. Company representatives, laboratory services, EBME and sterile services.
5. Liaise and communicate with the hospital Trauma Coordinator to enable organisation of theatre lists, post operative bed availability and pre-operative patient preparations.
6. Liaise and communicate with surgeons to ensure correct kit, equipment, trays and staffing levels.
7. Ensure Implants stock consignment levels are adhered to, Discuss any issues and stock levels with procurement and clinical operations manager.
8. Ensure all Orthopaedic Theatre equipment is checked as suitable for use prior to each patients operation.
9. Ensure all Orthopaedic instrument trays, implants and consumables are prepared and fit for use prior to each patients operation.
10. To demonstrate clinical expertise in scrub/anaesthetic and circulating practice within the Orthopaedic operating theatre.
11. Ensure the correct stock of implants required for patients undergoing major orthopaedic surgery.

18. Identify training needs for department and ensure these are fed into PDR process.
19. Support the development of the department team.
20. Ensure clinical learning environment is conducive for effective learning, undertake all such reasonable other duties as may be required as part of the role.
21. Attend and participate in meetings as required including providing feedback and disseminating information as appropriate.
22. Utilise information systems to plan and forecast future needs and ensure appropriate action.
23. Assist Clinical Operations Manager to monitor sickness, absence and competence issues and implement Trust policies.
24. Ensure systems are in place for risk assessment and minimisation, including promoting a no blame culture in order that incidents and near misses are reported.
25. To manage complaints at departmental level, including supporting junior staff to manage verbal complaints and refer on when unable to resolve.
26. To participate investigation of incidents/complaints as required.
27. Be proactive in the development of practice/services in the clinical area, through business planning process/service development, in conjunction with the Theatre manager and Matron.
