Overview
The Physician Assistant is qualified by training and experience as determined by the supervising physician. They may conduct physical examinations, perform inpatient and outpatient medical treatments, assist with surgical and diagnostic procedures in office or affiliated hospitals, or perform tasks delegated by the supervising physician that fall within the normal scope of practice.
The primary work schedule for this position will be first shift, with office hours in the clinic from 8:30 am – 5 pm, scheduled according to the needs of the department and supervising physician.
This role involves practicing in several surgical areas, primarily in trauma, acute care surgery, and general surgery, providing inpatient patient services and office clinic care as needed. There will also be opportunities to work with plastic surgery and surgical oncology when needed. Responsibilities may include education, research, and administrative services.
The Physician Assistant will assist with hospital procedures, hospital rounds, discharging patients, and any other functions performed by the supervising physician for which they are qualified and delegated by the supervising physician.
The supervising physician is responsible for overseeing the activities of the Physician Assistant and accepts responsibility for the medical services rendered. The supervising physician need not be physically present at all times but shall be immediately available by telecommunications and within reasonable travel distance to assist with patient care.
Both the physician and Physician Assistant are expected to understand and comply with all current laws, rules, and regulations governing the practice of Physician Assistants.
Responsibilities
* Examine patients and obtain medical history, including current complaints, past medical history, family medical history, social history, medications, allergies, and compliance with previous treatments and care plans.
* Provide acute and chronic patient care, including wellness physical exams, pre-operative interviews and exams (H&P), and minor inpatient/outpatient surgical procedures.
* Monitor therapies and continuity of care.
* Review the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP), prescribe medications, treat illnesses, give injections, suture wounds, and provide wound care.
* Provide operating room care, including positioning patients, assisting with intraoperative procedures, suturing and closing wounds, and using surgical instruments as directed by the surgeon.
* Triage patient calls and take appropriate action or refer to the appropriate physician or office staff.
* Document patient information and care provided in patient health records and maintain department statistics.
* Use a computer to access/enter needed data while maintaining patient confidentiality.
* Consult with physicians as needed and refer complicated medical cases to physicians.
* Counsel and educate patients/families on preventative health care.
* Provide continuity of care.
* Perform hospital rounds as needed or directed by the provider.
* Review labs, diagnostics, and physical therapy progress notes.
* Wear a clearly legible identification name tag with the words “Physician Assistant” as required by EVMS-Medical Group.
* Assist with outpatient clinic or office hours as needed based on physician availability and scheduling.
* Formulate and execute a daily plan addressing patient care issues, including diagnostic testing, lab data, treatment options, and dispositions.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chairman, supervising physician, and Associate Chair of Finance and Administration.
Qualifications
Masters in Physician Assistant. Experience with patients in a surgical setting is preferred.
Must be a licensed PA by the Virginia Board of Medicine and a certified physician assistant by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Current CPR certificate required.
