Background
Real time assessment of retinal perfusion and blood flow as a surrogate measure for cerebral perfusion in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) has recently been awarded $1m funding to use multimodal perfusion assessments to improve the assessment and monitoring of patients with severe traumatic brain injury, incorporating invasive neuromonitoring, retinal perfusion measures, near infra-red spectroscopy, doppler ultrasound and dark field microscopy to develop non-invasive measures of cerebral perfusion after TBI.
The project brings together the expertise of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) neurosurgery, ophthalmology, intensive care and major trauma services with the University of Birmingham's Neuroscience and Ophthalmology research expertise, as well as international partners.
This vacancy is for a neurosurgery clinical research fellow (CRF) working as part of the RETINA-TBI team based in the Department of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham and the Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospitals Birmingham. The post is funded by the United States Department of Defense.
Role Purpose
The post-holder will contribute to running of the RETINA-TBI study along with the research team of research nurses, technicians and students, and collect, analyse and publish research data.
The post holder will benefit from the infrastructure and expertise in neurotrauma as well as a track record of delivering TBI research. The post is funded for 36 months. The post-holder will be expected to register for a higher degree and will be supported to apply for further funding.
Main Responsibilities
1. To coordinate recruitment of patients to RETINA-TBI, including patient identification, consent and performance of trial-related procedures where relevant.
2. To ensure study procedures are conducted as per the protocol, including insertion of invasive neuromonitoring and collection of perfusion data and fluid samples.
3. To contribute to site file and data management under guidance of the trials coordinators and lead investigators.
4. To carry out a literature review of the topic area.
5. To gain sufficient research data and experience that will enable completion of a higher degree (PhD or MD). To comply with the terms and conditions set out in the fellowship and in the University of Birmingham's graduate Programme of study.
6. To contribute to the enhancement of scientific understanding of cerebral perfusion in TBI.
7. To undertake prescribed research tasks and collection of research data.
8. To prioritise tasks within the agreed work schedule to ensure that the project is delivered in a timely fashion according to study timelines.
9. To suggest and contribute to the development of research techniques and methods in collaboration with colleagues.
10. To contribute to writing bids for research grants.
11. To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective media such as publication, research seminars, conferences, etc.
12. To provide guidance to other staff and students.
13. To contribute to the production of research reports and high impact publications.
14. To plan and develop research contributions in the subject area using methodologies, critical evaluations, interpretations, analyses and other appropriate techniques.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
Essential:
1. MRCS or equivalent.
2. Full General Medical Council Registration with a Licence to Practice.
3. Understanding and experience of research methods and processes.
4. Medical degree.
Desirable:
1. Experience of trauma neurosurgery.
2. Demonstrable research experience.
3. Understanding and experience of research methods and processes related to the study of chronic inflammatory diseases.
4. Research publications.
Planning and organising
1. Plan for the use of research resources as appropriate.
2. Contribute to the planning of research projects.
3. Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort.
4. Prioritise responsibilities and various undertaken work-streams.
Decision Making
1. Critical decision making on appropriate amendments to experimental design and progress to ensure optimal output.
2. Plan for the use of research resources as appropriate.
3. Contribute to the planning of research projects.
