Introduction
Content Delivery Operations (CDO) is a vibrant 24/7 team responsible for the entire file-based delivery workflow for broadcast BBC TV, BBC iPlayer and BBC Red Button services throughout the UK. The CDO team is the integral link between production of a programme and bringing it to our audiences. The Content Delivery Operations Technicians report to Content Delivery Senior Operators.
The Content Delivery Operation receives, validates and then distributes BBC programmes for Playout, Access Services, Archives and other key stakeholders across the BBC. The file validation process ensures that all media sent from various post-production facilities meets the strict Digital Production Partnership (DPP) & BBC Technical Specifications. All file delivered programmes must be accounted for by CDO to ensure their readiness for transmission and online devices. CDO is responsible for publishing all content on BBC iPlayer. The team captures live programmes off-air and guarantees all pre-delivered assets pass quality control checks. The BBC is required by OFCOM to provide audio description and subtitles to the hearing and visually impaired; therefore CDO makes sure all playback options are available on platform. It is also CDO’s responsibility to revoke the availability of unsuitable programmes from BBC iPlayer and blank content without streaming rights. As well as video, CDO also manages audio and works alongside BBC Radio & Music to publish and replace files for BBC Sounds. CDO monitors and publishes the BBC Red Button service which includes activating calls to action graphics.

Job Purpose
The aim of the role is to work as part of a team on a regular shift pattern, including weekend and night shifts, to ensure the smooth running of operational workflows required by our live services, including TV and iPlayer and to ensure that the capability to deliver those services is maintained. An Operations Technician (OT) in the Content Delivery Operation will undertake defined processes within a range of workflows as well as working to resolve any issues encountered or escalating through defined routes.
Main Responsibilities
• Maintain a current understanding of the operational workflows employed to validate, share and/or publish programmes and Access Services (Subtitles and Audio Description) files.
• Identify any issues with delivered files or workflows and understand how and when to resolve these issues.
• To act as a point of contact, answering calls and emails from Production and scheduling teams relating to file delivery, publication and revocation.
• To support the evolution of processes over time as the services and technology develop, feeding into conversations around process and, where appropriate, updating documentation.
• To be familiar with the requirements and processes involved when handling sensitive content, including content which is embargoed for editorial reasons.
• To have an eye for detail and be able to monitor workflows to ensure they progress correctly, always following the agreed best practice.
• Observance of support structures; escalating in cases where a fix is required but cannot be performed by the Operations Technician.
• Focus on quality, and ensuring that best standards are maintained in order to ensure the smooth running of various workflows.
• Spot trends, quirks or anomalies that may impact the efficient or effective running of a system or workflow and, where appropriate, flag these for investigation or suggest areas of improvement.
• Appreciation of the stakeholders of a given workflow, both in terms of internal users and interested parties, and audience reliance on the system. The stakeholders range from Production teams to schedulers through engineering and operational teams to the audience.
• Prioritise actions in line with that understanding, and guidance from senior colleagues
• Logging incidents and issues to a high degree of accuracy and with appropriate levels of detail to enable colleagues to investigate and resolve any issues.
• An ability to work in line with guidance from senior team members, both in a general sense and adjusting approaches according to the requirements of the day.
• Appreciative of particular events or areas which occupy our focus as a broadcaster and how this affects a given workflow, and our treatment of it.
• Ensure that the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act, Working Time Directive and other workplace related legislation are observed.
• Managing the delivery and publication of embargoed content when scheduled in breaking news situations
• Is comfortable to advise senior colleagues on process or technology issues or enhancement opportunities, identifying possible improvements and, where appropriate, supporting their development and implementation.
Are you the right candidate?
The ideal candidate:
• Has a willingness to learn and thrive in an ever expanding environment with a proactive approach to problem solving and identifying potential issues ahead of time.
• Confident communication and excellent interpersonal skills, not necessarily technical skills with a keen attention to detail and the ability to prioritise work according to operational needs and deadlines.
• Enjoys liaising with numerous internal and external stakeholders and managing expectations.
• Experience working in media, post production or creative environments with an understanding of file based delivery workflows.
• A Strong team player with a passion for and knowledge of television and online platforms.
If you have some but not all of these skills, we’d still love to hear from you. We are looking for people with the right attitude and we offer training to help you grow in your career.
