Purpose: The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has committed to achieve Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2040 aligning with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and UK Research and Innovation sustainability commitments. Our Net Zero commitment covers Scope 1, Scope 2 and high impact Scope 3 emissions across our activity in the UK and internationally. Our main emissions derive from logistics, operations and science delivery using the RRS Sir David Attenborough, a fleet of aircraft, polar research stations and offices in the UK. At BAS our aim is to embed sustainability into everything we do. Our Net Zero strategic delivery plan comprises exciting renewable energy projects in Antarctica and Cambridge, improving the energy efficiency and energy performance of buildings, using data and AI to optimise fuel use on our ship and other areas, reducing travel emissions and embedding carbon and wider sustainability into the procurement processes. We are constantly scanning the horizon for new innovative technologies and new ways of working to support our decarbonisation targets and increase our efficiency. As part of this effort, the Net Zero team, within the Innovation and Impact Directorate at the British Antarctic Survey, drives and supports the Net Zero delivery plan. We are now looking for a Sustainability Manager to play a critical role in driving BAS’s net zero and sustainability efforts. Duties: Lead on the development/update and implementation of sustainability strategies that align with BAS’s net zero and sustainability commitments (Sustainable Procurement and Travel Policy, BAS Sustainability Strategy). (Band E) Contribute to BAS annual sustainability and carbon footprint reporting through data collection, analysis and improving methods and processes. Provide technical expertise across BAS teams to develop, update and improve implementation of our policies (Net Zero buildings policy, sustainable procurement policy, travel policy) ensuring sustainability is embedded into projects from procurement processes and tender specifications to project delivery stages. Work together with suppliers to ensure they meet BAS’s sustainability standards and identify opportunities to improve our sustainability performance within our supply chain. Challenge existing thinking in a positive way whilst building credibility and trust. Be a lead expert on sustainability and advocate responsible sustainability practices. Drive internal change and influence decision making to drive sustainability improvements. Present your work at working groups, senior management teams and wider BAS and external audiences. Work as part of multidisciplinary team. Attending, organising and chairing meetings. Identify industry best practices and lead initiatives to integrate those into BAS. Develop strong working relationships with key strategic stakeholders and partners. Work closely with NERC and UKRI colleagues to ensure alignment on sustainability work. We are primarily looking for a senior sustainability leader at Band E level but we could offer the position as Band D depending on skills and experience.
