The Grey Walter Department of Clinical Neurophysiology is based within the Brunel Building of Southmead Hospital. The department is looking for an experienced specialised neurophysiologist to join our busy service.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience across a wide range of specialist neurophysiological techniques and procedures with Master level post-graduate experience.
Candidates must be registerable with the AHCS/RCCP and should have ANS professional body (Part I and II) qualifications or evidence of this level.
This is full-time time position of 37.5 hours per week with an out-of-hours weekend on-call service for EEG also being provided.

Main duties of the job
The department carries out a range routine and non-routine procedures and the candidate would be expected to work across all areas of the department.
The main duties would include
Routine out-patient recordings (EEG, sleep deprived EEGs and ambulatory monitoring).
In-patient recordings (portable EEGs on the ward/ITU/NICU) and long term ITU monitoring.
Polysomnography (PSG and MSLT/MWT)
Evoked potential recordings (VEPs/BAEPs/SEPs/MEPs).
Nerve conduction studies (Carpal tunnel syndrome screening, ulnar neuropathy at the elbow, peripheral neuropathy screening).

• Provides complex and specialised Clinical Physiologist service(s) to patients of all ages from a range of specialities suffering from a wide range of medical disorders including those, which may be neurological and/or psychiatric in nature.
• Undertakes interpretation of results and provision of reports.
• Work collaboratively on a day to day basis with others to ensure that the service needs are met.
• Provides advice to clinicians.

The Grey Walter Department of Clinical Neurophysiology is a busy service that has Consultant Neurophysiologists and clinical physiologists working closely together to provide a wide range of routine, non-routine and complex procedures to the local population. The services provided include EEGs, EPs, NCS/EMG, IOM, PSG, as well the adult epilepsy surgery programme.
1. Monitor and maintain high professional standards of Neurophysiological services to patients.
2. To take responsibility for each investigation undertaken, whether within the department, on the wards, in theatre or on emergency call out.
3. Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure service(s) meet changing healthcare needs.
4. Provide support and assistance to Neurophysiological staff in dealing with difficult and conflicting situations including those that are of a clinical/professional nature.
5. Participate in the implementation of policies.
6. To provide, for patients, some basic, but in the majority complex diagnostic procedures which encompasses the planning, performance and interpretation of a range of neurophysiological investigations to a high level of competence.
Included are, the;
- Performance of Electroencephalographic (EEG) investigations employing current standard techniques without supervision in the EEG department taking appropriate action(s) where necessary. Also perform EEG’s on the ward. Patients of all ages are seen by the department.
- Performance of emergency EEGs on the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), Special Care Baby Units (SCBU/PICU) or general wards within the hospital and to undertake appropriate action when necessary.*
- Performance of EEG investigations using special techniques. These include;
activation recordings, recordings following sleep deprivation, recordings during administration and maintenance of sedation, recording during general anaesthesia, recording during stimulation of a non-routine nature, e.g. postural change, *
- Performance of long term ambulatory EEG monitoring and taking appropriate action(s). *
- Performance of polysomnography (PSG) recordings and MSLT/MWT. *
• Performance of Nerve Conduction Studies for Carpal Tunnel syndrome * and other peripheral neurophysiological conditions **
• Performance of Magnetic Stimulation studies. **
• Performance of advanced evoked potential recordings Back-averaging techniques, Movement Related Potentials and Bereitschafts Potentials. **

1. Provide reports on specialist Neurophysiological investigations.
2. Participate in audit and/or research and development programmes.
3. Maintain continuous professional development appropriate to the range of Neurophysiology services to patients.
4. Provide an out of hours week-end Neurophysiology Service.
5. Undertake simple fault remedy, cleaning and maintenance of recording equipment or any apparatus within the department including care and maintenance of electrodes.
6. Contribute to the effective and efficient use of information resources, administrative patient reporting and data storage.
7. Ensure personal compliance, with regard to mandatory, professional and personal development according to service needs.
8. Ensure personal compliance with CPD guidelines and professional codes of conduct.
9. Contribute to the maintenance of statistical information as required for statistical and other processes.
10. Contribute to the health and safety and quality assurance policies to patients, staff and visitors.
11. Communicate with; patients, carers, nursing and medical staff, managers, medical electronics and medical physics departments, administrative and clerical staff within the Clinical Neurophysiology department, all grades of Neurophysiologists within the Clinical Neurophysiology department, risk assessors etc.
12. Participate in the teaching and training of all routine procedures to other Clinical Physiologists (Neurophysiology) and staff grades in the department as required.
