The appointment to this post has the following aims: To join a team that provides comprehensive consultant-based, patient-centred management of Upper GI patients. The Trust is committed to providing equitable working conditions with colleagues for new appointments. To share in a comprehensive 1:8 rota for emergency and elective general and Upper GI care To provide expertise and leadership within the Three Counties Oesophago-gastric Centre based in Gloucestershire Hospitals. Including: o Oesophago-gastric resection using minimally invasive and ERAS techniques o Comprehensive management of benign upper GI surgical conditions o Specialist Benign Upper GI and general surgery clinics o 2WW and MDT Cancer clinics Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy service (with opportunity to develop/acquire specialist endoscopy skills o MDT attendance o Service development To contribute to the continuing development of the departments clinical, research and educational interests. Appropriate additional duties would be incorporated into the post-holders job-plan after initial job-plan review. To contribute to the ongoing reconfiguration of GI and emergency general surgery in Gloucestershire. To work closely with an outstanding team of 5 cancer nurse specialists. It is envisioned that this post will work to consolidate our close ties to Worcestershire, which will likely include on site sessions. The post-holder will be expected to contribute to a Consultant-led service. It is envisioned that a new appointee would be supported with advanced mentoring from senior colleagues, particularly with the oesophago-gastric resections. Clinical Responsibilities: The appointee will be expected: - To share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the department To examine and treat patients on the shop floor of the Department To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff To provide on call support out of hours. To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols. To remain contactable and available when on call To carry out ward round Education and Training To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations. To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme. To assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, SpRs, STs and other staff as appropriate Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning. This would be agreed at initial job-plan review (6-12 months) and reflected in SPA allocation. Two education fellows have recently been appointed and laparoscopic simulation equipment has been updated. Opportunities exist to be involved with helping to develop the existing excellent training environment at GHFT. To undertake all work in accordance with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust procedures and operating policies To attend accredited conferences and meetings to update personal level of clinical practice, teaching and management skills in line with CME/CPD requirements To participate in an annual Job Planning Review process To participate in the Trusts annual Appraisal process and to respond to any identified development needs. To adhere to the Trusts Adverse Clinical Incident Policy Audit (as agreed with Service Line Director) To promote evidence-based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. To change own and others clinical practice in response to new clinical developments To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topics To be involved in risk management and quality assurance To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCS guidelines To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes. These build on the considerable progress already made by the Trust in clinical audit and continuous quality improvement.
