Position Summary Why join our team? This paralegal position is with the Data Protection Office (the “DPO”) at Samsung Electronics Europe Office. It involves liaising regularly and directly with Suwon Office and the Subsidiaries on all data protection and privacy matters. The paralegal will support the lawyers who advise on data protection. The work will involve dealing with a broad spectrum of legal queries, attending meetings with key business teams, providing support to the subsidiaries in relation to data subject requests, assisting in the drafting of legal documents, policies, guidelines and advice. Data Protection is an area of unprecedented importance to Samsung Electronics as it expands into new technologies, such as smart TVs, wearables and smart homes in a landscape of ongoing substantial regulatory change. Role and Responsibilities Your key responsibilities The following are examples of the key areas of work you will be involved in: Day to day data protection advice to the Europe Office, Suwon Office and the Subsidiaries Developing and implementing policies and guidelines on all Samsung Electronics’ data processing activities in line with data protection laws Supporting Suwon Office, the Europe Office and the Subsidiaries with inquiries from national regulators on privacy issues Advising on the General Data Protection Regulation (the “GDPR”) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Providing support to the Subsidiaries in relation to data subject’s requests under the GDPR Implementation of new and updated legal and business processes and procedures to ensure Samsung’s compliance with the GDPR Reviewing, drafting, and advising on Data Protection Impact Assessments Preparing, drafting and reviewing legal agreements including Data Transfer Agreements and Data Processing Agreements Assisting with the maintenance of Samsung’s Record of Processing Activities Attending meetings with key collaborators and external advisers, participating and recording minutes of the discussions Researching ongoing developments with data protection law and preparing legal updates Reporting to the Head of Department, Senior Management and Suwon Office, where appropriate General admin tasks as are required by the management team, including: Collating Subsidiary feedback for Suwon Office and DPO requests for information Assistance with preparation of training materials/presentations Ad-hoc administrative support for the broader Europe Office Legal team Ad-hoc project support What we need for this role To be successful, you will possess the following skills and attributes: Candidates should have excellent academics and possess a law degree or have completed a law conversion course; Legal experience, and in-house experience is desirable but not essential; Candidates are expected to be patient, pragmatic, dynamic and flexible; Excellent communicator; Team orientated; Detail focused: Quick learner; Good analytical skills; Finally, you will be expected to develop a deep understanding of Samsung’s products and business and assist with guiding the business teams with clear advice in a fast paced environment. The interview process There will be 2 rounds: The first round will be an online meeting with the Head of DPO and a Legal Counsel. This round will be competency-based, and focus on getting to know you and your CV (approx. 1 hour). The second round will be in person at Samsung House in Chertsey. Approximately one week prior, you will be sent a technical exercise to prepare in advance, and you will have 20-30 minutes to present your findings with the interviewers (approx. 30 minutes - 1 hour). Please note that you are not expected at this level to identify all the legal issues in the technical exercise. We are looking for your ability to spot and resolve fundamental issues, and your analytical ability and judgement.
