Consultant in Ophthalmology - Interest in Cornea & External Eye Disease
We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Ophthalmology - interest in cornea & external eye disease on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Ophthalmology department.
Our client currently is one of the biggest trusts in the UK, with a regional Head and Neck Cancer centre. The post will be one of nine ophthalmic consultants, each with their own specialist fields, all of whom are also involved in the provision of a general ophthalmic service to the south within the area as well as some of the nearby areas. Being a large DGH with a proud history, we are big enough to get interesting cases, but small enough to care, coach and develop. With over 200 consultants, a similar number of trainees and approximately 60 medical undergraduates throughout the year, this provides comprehensive care and extensive training opportunities. They have built a state-of-the-art emergency assessment unit (Nye Bevan building) and are developing new ways of working to streamline in-patient care and optimize working with our partners.
The successful appointee will be asked to undertake various duties within the department, including:
1. Providing a comprehensive Ophthalmic service, primarily developing and helping run the cornea and external eye disease service while also being a capable general ophthalmologist.
2. Proficiency in cataract surgery is essential, and a commitment to training is likewise necessary.
3. Participating in the consultant on-call rota for emergency duties and providing, on a reciprocal basis, emergency cover for colleagues during periods of absence (currently 1:10 Monday – Friday lunchtime, and 1:10 Friday afternoons and weekends).
4. Maintaining continuing responsibility for the patients in his/her care and for the proper functioning of the department.
5. Carrying out teaching duties as required and actively participating in the Postgraduate Medical Education programme and in the teaching of Ophthalmic Trainees within the department.
6. Contributing to the teaching and training of nursing staff and other healthcare professionals both within the department and elsewhere within the Trust.
7. Regularly attending and participating in departmental educational meetings.
Our client offers the best of both worlds, with the attractions of big cities, attractive market towns, and villages, all within easy travelling distance & excellent transport links to big cities such as Birmingham & London along with 2 highly touted international airports.
