Who We Are:
Opening to the public for the first time in 2025, the John O’Groats Mill is a community-led state-of-the-art seasonal heritage attraction and venue, one mile from the iconic John O’Groats signpost and on the doorstep of the popular NC500. Over the summer season the Mill will be open 6 days a week as a self-led static museum attraction, enhanced by regular guided tours and demonstrations of its original industrial machinery. The Mill also doubles as a community and function space outwith museum opening hours.
Who We Are Looking For:
The John O’Groats Mill are looking for passionate and flexible individuals to aid in seasonal operations and visitor care. They should be polite and well-presented, with excellent communication and a willingness to learn and share their knowledge with others. Positions are seasonal, with various work patterns and contracts available, from 10 to 30 hours.
Responsibilities:
-Welcoming visitors to the site and processing their admission with a friendly and informed attitude.
-Helping to meet additional visitor needs (non-english speaking, disabled, children) in a cool and respectful manner.
-Answering in-person and phone queries about the site’s history, industrial processes, and current function, booking information on function spaces and the holiday cottages, and about other local amenities.
-Conducting in-depth informative tours of the site to audiences of all ages/knowledge-levels (training will be given).
-Conducting special tours and activities for visiting school groups.
-Organising retail space/merchandise and promoting and vending retail offerings.
-Financial administration; operating till for financial transactions and totalling till at end of day, using the Mill Trust’s booking system.
-To assist in the preparation and operation of events and functions occurring on occasional evenings and outwith regular work hours.
-Aid in maintenance of visitor interpretation, industrial equipment, and historical objects under supervision.
-General operational cleaning of all areas, including outdoors, toilet areas, emptying bins, coffee machine, sweeping, etc.
-Occasional aid in cleaning and maintaining the Mill’s two on-site holiday properties.
-Wearing appropriate clothing, uniform, or PPE when required.
-Report instances of damage, theft, injury, or complaint with your manager.
-Ensure site is open and operational by and within advertised opening times.
-Ensure that visitors are vacated and site is secured at end of day.
Required Formal Qualifications:
No formal educational qualifications required
Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
-Experience in customer-facing roles, demonstrating excellent inter-personal skills.
-Experience in cash-handling and till systems; ideally with sales or admissions experience.
-Ability to work as part of a small team to ensure smooth and efficient operations through collective decision-making and shared workloads.
-Flexible, friendly, polite, and helpful outlook.
-Willingness to learn new information and skills.
-Good grasp of surrounding area in regard to geography, history, and local amenities.
-Aptitude for storytelling and passion about the heritage of the mill and of its surrounding area.
Other Required:
Own transport to site (bus timetable does not accord with weekend/evening work).
