Job overview
This is a developmental role; post holders will be employed full time clinical apprentice (37.5 hours per week) as a Registered Midwife Degree Apprentice (RMDA). The apprentice will work towards progression into the post of Registered Midwife through successful completion of the BSc (Hons) Midwifery degree training programme at University of Birmingham. Through a mixture of academic and practice-based learning and assessment, post holders will develop and maintain knowledge, skills and competencies as laid out by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
The BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme combines and integrates both academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between employers and education providers University of Birmingham. An apprentice will be based, as an employee in the Trust, in a Maternity setting, but will experience working in alternative settings in order to gain a wide appreciation of many health and care contexts across the Trust.
Main duties of the job
As an apprentice, leading to regulation by the NMC, the post holder will develop an understanding and act in accordance with the NMC Code: Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates and fulfil all registration requirements of the regulatory body. The training programme is 39 months minimum and apprentices will have set periods or blocks of study time, and set periods of practice-based learning. When on a study block this will be timetabled by The University of Birmingham. When on placement, RMDAs will undertake a variety of shift patterns covering 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
The apprentice will:
1. Under supervision deliver high quality, compassionate and evidence-based antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care to women and their families accessing Maternity Services.
2. Act as an advocate for women and their families recognising the importance of woman-centred, individualised care whilst respecting and supporting choices in a non-judgemental and professional manner.
3. Develop and enhance sound clinical knowledge of underpinning theory behind Midwifery and show the ability to apply this to practice.
4. Demonstrate awareness of the wider scope of Midwifery practice and the National frameworks/bodies that govern this.
5. Demonstrate working within and communicating effectively to a wider multi-disciplinary team, to be able to plan and deliver safe and effective care for women and their families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The apprenticeship programme combines theoretical and practical skills complemented with clinical exposure in a range of specialties and settings at the Trust. Apprentices will be assessed using a mixture of text-based submissions and assignments, written and oral examinations, presentations, clinical skills and assessment which will be conducted both in practice and in simulated environments.
The programme is delivered over 3 academic years and each year the apprentice will experience a number of modules totaling 360 credits which must be achieved in order to complete the training. The modular approach divides the content of the programme into manageable elements of study and practice.
At the end of the programme, the RMDA will be equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and behaviours, as laid out by the NMC and will be placed into a vacant Midwifery post within the Trust and moved to a different job description and pay scale.
Person specification
* Experience of working in a healthcare setting preferably with a focus on women’s and child health or sexual health.
* Be able to work as a member of a team and is able to deal with the non-routine and unpredictable nature of the workload.
* Can demonstrate experience and insight into how to evaluate own strengths & development needs.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
* Understanding of the scope of the role of the Registered Midwife. Can demonstrate an understanding of a range of skills/procedures and care that may be undertaken by a Registered Midwife.
* Evidence of time management skills and ability to prioritise and can articulate how you will study & work at the same time.
* Ability to communicate with members of the public and health and care providers.
* Committed to providing high quality patient care.
