An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Orthoptist to join our dynamic Orthoptic team at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.
The post will provide Orthoptic clinical cover at all Trust Hospitals with a base at Royal Derby Hospital, but also covering community sites across the area.
We provide a full range of sub-speciality clinics including ocular motility, paediatrics, neuro-ophthalmology, visual processing disorders, stroke, paediatric special educational needs, paediatric low vision, secondary vision screening and oculoplastics. The successful candidate will be working alongside a multidisciplinary team which includes Ophthalmologists, Nurses, Optometrists, Technicians, administrative staff, and health care assistants.
The successful candidate will have clinical experience, be able to practice independently but will be provided with clinical and professional support and advice within the Orthoptic department.
This post would be most suitable for experienced Orthoptists already working in a Band 5 or Band 6 role, however preceptorship support can be offered to newly qualified Orthoptists and the pay scale will be amended in line with annex 21 of AFC NHS Terms and Conditions.
Main duties of the job
To be responsible for the Orthoptic assessment, diagnosis, and appropriate management of all new and follow up paediatric and adult patients referred for an Orthoptic opinion including patients with:
The Orthoptist is often the first point of contact to patients and therefore must be confident in the planning, implementing, and monitoring of Orthoptic treatment for all paediatric and adult patients, ensuring onward referral and collaboration with other specialist services including optometry, ocular motility, paediatric strabismus, oculoplastic, botulinum toxin and neuro-ophthalmology, when needed to ensure effective management for patients.
To test visual fields in patients referred from ophthalmology, neurology, endocrinology, stroke and rehabilitation and head injury teams, using Humphrey and Goldmann and Octopus field analysers.
To undertake secondary visual screening in children referred from general practice, health visitors, school nurses, hospital doctors and allied health professionals.
Instillation of appropriate eye drops in patients across the age range as agreed by the Ophthalmologist in accordance with the local PGD or utilising Medical Exemptions.

* Registration with Health Professions Council, and preferably membership of The British and Irish Orthoptic Society
* Specialist knowledge across a range of clinical procedures including stroke assessment
