Job summary
The Clinical Biochemistry department at the East Sussex Health Care Trust is located on two sites, Eastbourne and Conquest (Hastings) District general hospitals and provides a wide range of diagnostic services for the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust and to East Sussex GPs.
The successful candidate will join an impressive, friendly team dedicated to providing a first-class patient-centred service including the Lead Consultant in Chemical pathology/Metabolic Medicine, two Consultant Clinical scientists and a Grade A Clinical scientist. The post would suit either a first-time consultant or an established consultant in Chemical Pathology with special interest particularly in lipidology and cardiovascular risk prevention. In addition to contributing to the laboratory work, the post holder will be expected to conduct and expand the lipid/cardiovascular disease prevention clinics which are presently run by the single consultant with the support ofClinical Pharmacist who is Lead Stroke / Anticoagulation/ IVIGand Lipid Specialist Pharmacist. The department offers all routine clinical biochemistry diagnostic tests including general chemistry, endocrinology, tumour markers, haematinics, HbA1c, xanthochromia scanning and protein electrophoresis. We receive about 3,000 samples per day across both sites.
The present single Chemical Pathology Consultant is based mainly at EDGH, but with clinics also at the Conquest Hospital.
There is presently no consultant on-call requirement.
Main duties of the job
Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies.
Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trusts service plans.
Contribution to continuing UKAS accreditation. The department is proudly UKAS accredited, with state of the art equipment and experienced, solid technical staff
The department has strong links with other departments particularly Endocrinology/Diabetes and Cardiology
The appointee will also be expected to join and be involved in the various regional lipid and cardiovascular disease groups such as the KSS Lipids & FH Steering Group Meeting and weekly regional lipid meetings with lipidologists from other Trusts in the area. There are also ad hoc regional meetings about pathways, new drugs, and similar, in collaboration with the primary sector.
The appointee is expected to join the hospital Grand Round Rota and be involved in hospital, laboratory and GP teaching activities
The department facilitates research by other departments but any personal research interests will be encouraged provided they are in line with the department's agenda.
