Job Description
We are recruiting for a Facilities Engineer for our client Forestry Commission. Forest Research is the research agency of the Forestry Commission and a world leader in applied forest science. The in-house facilities team is currently managing an exciting multi-year capital investment programme across the built estate. The current facilities team is expanding to enable effective implementation of our current investment projects together with the ongoing building management within the Alice Holt Research Station.
The Alice Holt Research Station is a complex site with a wide range of buildings and other structures including the Alice Holt Lodge, multiple laboratories, greenhouses, growth chambers, and a wide range of site infrastructure. Management of the site includes a wide range of planned and reactionary maintenance work along with a significant ongoing capital investment programme.
Purpose: The postholder will report to the Alice Holt Facilities Manager and will support the technical operation of our labs, buildings, and surrounding areas, ensuring they are adequately maintained in accordance with the required standards. The role will cover both reactive and pre-planned maintenance tasks as well as health and safety compliance checks with accurate record keeping.
What will you be doing?
1. Plan and organise the day-to-day management of planned and reactive maintenance work across the Alice Holt Research Station to ensure that the site meets all statutory requirements and safe working practices.
2. Instruct and supervise contractors on site, respond to enquiries and reports, provide advice to users, and perform fault finding, maintenance, and repair work as required.
3. Support the Facilities Manager in delivering any other new projects which could involve customer liaison, writing the brief for works, the appointment, management, and co-ordination of external service providers, and stakeholder liaison.
4. Proactively support FR's Environmental Management System for energy, waste, and water from the estate to ensure FR's ongoing ISO14001 certification, environmental best practice, and support for the Greening Government Initiative.
5. Deputise for Facilities Manager as required on the wider estate.
Essential Criteria:
1. Good experience of planning and managing contract work and of supervising contractors to meet required technical standards and safe working practices.
2. Knowledge of procedures for diagnosing faults, maintenance and repair of plant, equipment, and buildings in relation to core trade skills.
3. Carry out rectification works to either make safe or repair in critical circumstances.
4. Experience of working in a multi-skilled role in technical estate management, supporting and prioritising multiple projects at any one time.
5. Working knowledge of current Health and Safety regulations and relevant codes of practice.
6. Literacy and numeracy skills, good communication and interpersonal skills to communicate technical information.
Desirable Criteria:
1. Health & Safety qualification IOSH/NEBOSH, HNC/D or equivalent in an electrical, mechanical, or building services discipline.
2. Qualification in electrical if core trade is mechanical engineering, or vice versa.
3. Multi-trade experience.
