Job summary: Assisting medical personnel in the care of practice patients, to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Lead, supervise, co-ordinate and guide the nursing team.
2. Manage the training of the nursing service in participation with the practice manager ensuring relevant information is disseminated to and from the nursing staff.
3. In participation with the practice manager, carry out yearly appraisals of all the nursing staff, producing a training programme in conjunction with the Practice Manager.
4. Ensure all nurses are moving towards revalidation.
5. Plan, chair and minute management meetings for all nurses.
6. Ensure all protocols, policies and procedures are adhered to by all nursing staff.
7. Deal with day-to-day minor disciplinary and conduct matters.
8. Represent the practice and practice nursing team at CCG wide nurse forums.
9. Have overall responsibility for supply chains, stock levels and reordering.
10. Have overall responsibility for infection control and infection control training and conformity for the practice.
11. Hold practice responsibility for the child immunisation programme and reporting.
12. Have responsibility for nurse led QOF targets.
13. Have overall responsibility for the Cytology programme within the practice.
14. Mentor and organise training for the HCAs and Phlebotomists.
15. Organise and coordinate annual leave and cover.
16. Organise clinically appropriate and requested audits.
17. Provide assessment, screening and treatment services and health education advice.
18. Organise and co-ordinate the provision of nursing services for the practice, including the delegation of duties to other practice nursing staff as appropriate.
19. Provide nursing treatments to patients in participation with general practitioners or independently, meeting agreed protocols.
20. Provide general and specific health screenings to practice patients (within agreed protocols) with referral to general practitioners as necessary.
21. Advise patients on general health care and minor ailments with referral to GPs as necessary.
22. Manage supplies and equipment in treatment room and other areas.
23. In participation with the practice manager, ensure the maintenance of equipment and stock levels relating to patient care.
24. Handle pathological specimens and investigatory procedures following appropriate training, including the collection, storage, and despatch of pathological specimens such as intravenous blood samples, swabs, smears, etc.
25. Perform any investigatory procedures requested by the GPs.
Administrative and Professional Responsibilities:
1. Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team.
2. Ensure accurate notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients' notes on the clinical computer system as appropriate.
3. Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the practice.
4. Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports.
5. Attend and participate in practice meetings as required.
6. Assist in the formulation of practice philosophy, strategy and policy and develop appropriate protocol.
Research Projects:
Co-operate and participate as required in any research projects within the practice.
Student/Staff Education and Training:
Participate in the education and training of students of all disciplines and the induction of all members of practice staff with special responsibility for nursing staff.
Liaison:
Maintain effective liaison with other agencies and staff concerned with patient care and with all other disciplines within the practice, with appropriate regard to confidentiality.
Professional Development:
Maintain continued education by attendance at courses and study days as deemed useful or necessary for professional development.
