DESIGN ENGINEER

Gates Corporation is an industry leading manufacturer of application-specific fluid power and power transmission solutions. The company has facilities around the world serving the automotive, industrial and Oil & Gas sectors. This position is part of the Research & Engineering team, based in Cramlington.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Working full-time from our Cramlington facility, the main function of the design engineer is to research new technologies and innovations and apply these to the development of new products to meet customer and market needs. This includes research and development to optimise product performance, cost and manufacturability. The role requires participating in the commercialisation process and providing technical support to engineering & services team, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain management.
Key responsibilities:
* Plan, co-ordinate, and hand over all applicable SOPs for either E&S or Production.
* Design new hose build-ups and fittings using Inventor.
* Manage BOM of prototype and procurement of components to enable prototyping and ensure all parts are captured in the ERP package (e.g. SAP, DataRight).
* Apply design techniques such as DOE or statistical analysis where needed to problem solving and to optimise development cycle time.
* Monitor cost and schedule the progress of the prototypes and pre-production runs.
* Initiate corrective action to designs or processes for technical or production purposes.
* Ensure all Project Data is recorded and updated, proper work procedures available and maintained using Vault Pro package.
ABOUT YOU
Required Experience:
* Master's degree in engineering is preferred.
* Minimum of 5 years' experience in R&D or 3 years of R&D experience in related product line.
* Proven track record of innovation and problem solving.
* Patent experience preferred.
Required Skills:
* Strong technical and analytical skills in Maths and Science with attention to detail and accuracy.
* Good verbal and written communication skills.
* Experience with Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project).
* Experience with 3D Design Modelling tools, Inventor preferred.
* Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools, 'Marc' preferred.
* DFSS skills including Design of Experiments (DOE), DFMEA, PFMEA, SPC, Weibull and other statistical tools.
* Ability to work effectively within a cross functional team at all levels of the organisation and across global boundaries.
* Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.
* Good project and time management skills.
* Customer and quality focused.
