Job Summary
This position is a junior fellow post and ideal for candidates who have a strong interest in the field of cardiology or cardiothoracic surgery. It offers opportunities to get familiar with the entire spectrum of adult cardiac, vascular, and thoracic work and offers the unique opportunity to build a network with high profile consultants from all major university hospitals in London. Mentorship for the successful candidates is directly provided from the institute chairs Professor Olaf Wendler (cardiac surgery) and Professor Bernard Prendergast (cardiology). For previous postholders, this position has offered opportunities to start PhD projects and medical master educational programs, as well as appointments into national training posts.
This is a Clinical Fellow position responsible for the daily admission and management of patients on the cardiac unit, comprised of both medical and post-op surgical cardiac/vascular and cardiothoracic patients. A suitable candidate should be competent in the assessment and management of relevant clinical conditions related to cardiac procedures such as cardiac ablation, pacemaker insertion, TAVI and percutaneous coronary intervention, and cardiothoracic surgery including coronary artery bypass graft, valve replacement, pneumonectomy and lobectomy. An ideal candidate would be a CMT to ST grade in Cardiology or Cardiothoracic Surgery and hold relevant certifications such as MRCP, MRCS/FRCS or equivalent.

Job Responsibilities:
Clinical:
* Working as a part of the Cardiac/Cardiothoracic fellow workforce covering an average fill of 25 beds of the normal ward.
* Working collaboratively with specialist consultants and nursing professionals to ensure that patients' treatment and care needs are met.
* Being a part of the rolling rota covering a 24-7 acute service in the Cardiac/Cardiovascular and General Surgical unit.
* Managing cardiac/cardiothoracic patients including those undergoing cardiac procedures such as cardiac ablation, pacemaker insertion, TAVI and percutaneous coronary intervention, and cardiothoracic operations including coronary artery bypass graft, valve replacement and pulmonary resections.
* Leading and assisting with new admissions and inpatient consultations, including morning and evening multidisciplinary ward rounds.
* Proactively identifying patients who qualify for early mobilisation, are at clinical risk or may need a longer length of stay.
Professional:
* Taking part in clinical governance, education, training and research to continuously improve and strive for excellence.
* Participating in the regular in-house learning sessions and other educational activities, as well as taking up educational responsibilities.
* Adhering to the best practice guidelines, clinical audits, and governance.
* Active involvement in clinical governance meetings, including but not limited to mortality review, safety event reporting, peer review, and other relevant activities.
* Continual commitment and participation in mandatory training, including Epic electronic medical record system.
* If interested, participating in professional development opportunities, such as medical management & leadership, education & simulation or academic research programmes within CCL or the main campus in Cleveland, US.
Education:
* MBBS or equivalent
* Fully registered with the GMC and current license to practice

* Competent in the peri-operative management of cardiac patients including basic assessment, investigation and management.
Work Experience:
* CMT / ST level or equivalent.
* Perioperative patient management experience of cardiac and cardiothoracic patients including arrhythmias and chest drains.
