Introduction
The York School of Architecture is one of the University of York's exciting transformational initiatives. The department's research is interdisciplinary, building on York's research strengths in architecture and urban heritage to create a department that supports our commitment to the public good. The School is looking to recruit a Research Associate in Architectural and Urban Heritage with a focus on digital and virtual technology and AI. The successful candidate will be based at the Centre of Architecture, Urbanism and Global Heritage (CAUGH) at York School of Architecture and will work with a research team on undertaking, analyzing, and delivering active research projects. This post involves working with the Project lead, Professor Gamal Abdelmonem, international partners, and governmental organisations.
The role involves collecting and processing fieldwork data and digital records, as well as interfaces with Generative AI, while helping analyze research data and develop original publications and research outputs. You will be expected to investigate, develop, and test a series of research reports and digital and online datasets and plan interactive engagement with archaeological sites through virtual technologies for different community groups.
You will contribute to the development of Interactive VR and mixed-reality experiences and digital displays that engage the tourism sector as well as local community members. You will be expected to coordinate research workshops, events, and project meetings. This role involves contributions to project reports, publications, and grant applications. This role is Part-time (0.5FTE) and runs for 12 months as a facilitating role to work closely with Professor Mohamed Gamal Abdelmonem.
Main purpose of the role
The main purpose of this role is:
1. To conduct research under the supervision of Professor Gamal Abdelmonem and to contribute to the production of research through data collection, processing, and analysis and contribute to outputs and publications.
2. To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects.
Key responsibilities
(Role holders will be required to undertake some or all of the duties below)
1. To conduct collaborative research projects including: analysis and interpretation of data; use of appropriate techniques and methods; writing up of results and dissemination.
2. To contribute to the preparation of research proposals and applications to external bodies.
3. To undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities.
4. To develop and initiate collaborative working internally and externally, including: building of internal contacts and participation in internal networks; collaboration with colleagues on joint projects as required; participation in and identification of external networks.
5. To provide guidance to other staff and students, as required, as well as coordinate the work of small research teams.
6. To assist with undergraduate teaching in own area of expertise.
