At EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), we help scientists realise the potential of 'big data' in biology, exploiting complex information to make discoveries that benefit humankind.
The revolution in imaging technologies has led to the need to share, integrate and reuse image data in a comprehensive way. EMBL-EBI is a world-leader in the archival and dissemination of biological image data, operating the BioImage Archive and EMPIAR (the Electron Microscopy Public Image Archive), which together provide the means to store and search life science datasets from all imaging technologies at all scales and across all modalities.
Role overview and purpose
This role will provide a key link between the UK biological imaging community and EMBL-EBI’s imaging data resources. The post-holder will work closely with facility staff, experimental biologists and image analysts to understand and support their needs in image data management, annotation and publication. They will build on this knowledge to design and deliver training materials for skills training in image data stewardship within the UK, and hence build a strong community of practice.
Your role
Specific responsibilities:
* Support end users in their data depositions to EBI’s biological imaging resources, providing direct support and structured documentation
* Work with imaging facility scientists, experimental biologists and image analysts to develop training materials addressing key end user needs in image data management
* Deliver training to the UK imaging community on image data management through structured workshops, train-the-trainer events and recorded material
* Attend conferences, training courses and workshops to share best practice and coordinate with networks of data stewards across Europe and beyond
* Contribute to the broader team activities, including helpdesk support, planning, design review and improvement of the team's working processes
Grading: Grade 5 or 6 (monthly salary from £3,229 or £3,612 after tax) plus benefits.
Minimum Requirements
You should have a first degree in a life sciences subject, and an advanced degree (masters or PhD equivalent) in a life sciences field with a strong dependence on biological imaging.
Specific experience:
* Substantial experience working with light and/or electron microscopy image data either as an experimental scientist or image analyst
* Managing imaging data, including consideration of the FAIR principles and open science
* Developing and/or delivering training to a range of audiences
* Working as part of collaborative projects with differing stakeholders
Personal attributes:
* A strong affinity with, and enthusiasm for, the goal of EMBL-EBI to provide world-class open data and services to the global community
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
You might also have:
* Experience working with and/or managing other types of biological data (e.g. ‘omics or structural biology data)
* Substantial experience working in biological image analysis (e.g. as a facility image analyst or as part of specific research projects)
* Data standards development and/or implementation experience, e.g. working with ontologies, controlled vocabularies, data models and/or metadata schema
* Experience with research infrastructure for biological data management, e.g. large databases, OMERO, or information management systems
Benefits
