As an Engineering Apprentice at GWR, you'll train and learn, while you earn everything from how to service, repair and react to faults reported during operations of the GWR fleet with the aim of becoming our Engineers of the future. The apprenticeship is designed to maximise your full potential and provide you with the competencies and qualifications needed to work as a skilled Engineer. During the Apprenticeship, you will study a level 2 and 3 qualification in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering with an opportunity to progress to an HNC based on progression through the apprenticeship. You'll also have your very own mentor to guide and support you through your journey. You won't be on your own - we'll support you every step of the way. Alongside the training at the depot, you'll attend college to works towards the required Engineering qualification. You'll also be given the opportunity to enrol on the Duke of Edinburgh Business gold scheme in year 2 of your apprenticeship. Who are you? You'll enjoy working with people, have great communication, numerical and team working skills. You'll bring with you your enthusiasm to learn and a commitment to broadening your knowledge and developing a career in Engineering. Essentially, you must be over 16 years of age, live within one hour of the locations listed and have achieved Functional Skills Level 2 or GCSE grade 4 and above in Maths, English and Science plus two other subjects, ICT would be desirable. For the first 2 years of the apprenticeship, you will do day shifts between 07:00 and 20:00, Monday through Saturday, with a rest day and study time during this period. For year 3 & 4 you will follow a 24/7 shift pattern. During periods of training, overnight stays may be required. The apprenticeship scheme starts on 26th August 2025 and is for four years.
