The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Highways Engineer to join our Consulting Highways design hub at Stafford. This is a hybrid role, offering you flexibility to work between the office and home.
Amey have been working with Staffordshire County Council (SCC) since 2014 to manage and maintain the county's highways infrastructure. We take pride in delivering exceptional infrastructure services across 6,000km of Staffordshire, ensuring roads, cycle routes, bridges, tunnels, lighting, drainage, traffic signals, trees, and land are well-maintained and improved to enhance the lives of local residents and communities.
Amey Consulting provide design and other support services to SCC and developers across the whole of the County through our contract with SCC. We are seeking an experienced and motivated Civil Engineer to support our Design and Development team.
The role
As a Civil Engineer, you will support the Senior Engineer and lead junior Engineers in the design and delivery of multiple highway projects ranging from junction improvements to new roads, active travel schemes and structures.
The team manage a large portfolio of work, ranging from detailed design of £1m+ projects, S278/S111 including technical checking and active travel schemes in accordance with LTN 1/20. There is also requirements for site supervision on behalf of our Client Staffordshire County Council, managing schemes via the NEC form of contract.
Responsibilities include:
1. To work in a team, producing technically sound highways engineering solutions
2. Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme
3. Utilising software such as Civils 3D and Micro-drainage
4. Preparation of technical reports, feasibility studies, Road safety audit briefs, and public correspondence
5. Work up traffic regulation order details
6. Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions
7. Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries
8. Managing a small, locally based single discipline technical team and taking responsibility for delivery of their workload
9. Contributing to the preparation of bids and general working winning function
10. Drive effective health and safety practices within the team
What you will bring to us:
1. Developed experience and expertise within Highways engineering field, probably gained in an Assistant Engineer role or equivalent
2. An ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
3. Relevant experience in highways design, particularly DMRB, manual for Streets and knowledge of LTN 1/20.
4. Takes ownership for the preparation and checking of deliverables, and can check deliverables to a reasonable standard
5. Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools
6. Demonstrates good commercial awareness
7. Has a good understanding of CDM 2015 regulations and risk assessment. Experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied
8. Demonstrates a good understanding of interface management, and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines
9. Successful completion of the initial professional development leading to either Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence and to the level defined by your education
10. Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning
