The mission of William & Mary’s Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences & Virginia Institute of Marine Science ( VIMS ) is to seek and broadly communicate knowledge in marine and coastal science to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world through research, education, and advisory service. Position Summary
Reporting to the Managing Financial Officer, the Financial Specialist is an entry-level position within the Office of Finance, dedicated to supporting the financial operations of the Institution’s research programs and higher education initiatives. This role involves processing financial transactions, maintaining financial records, and assisting in budget monitoring and reporting for various grants and funding sources. The successful candidate will have a foundational understanding of financial principles, strong analytical skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic academic and research environment.
Conditions of Employment
This is a Non-Exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act ( FLSA ). This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc., or as directed and approved by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
* Familiarity with financial software and spreadsheet applications (e.g., Excel), in addition to knowledge of Workday, Banner or other enterprise resource planning ( ERP ) systems.
* Working knowledge of Commonwealth of VA higher education financial policies and procedures.
* Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial data entry and reporting.
* Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
* Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with diverse stakeholders.
* Ability to work collaboratively within a team while maintaining a high level of professionalism and integrity.
Preferred Qualifications
* Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
* Experience in financial analysis or accounting within a higher education setting.
* Proficiency in Workday Financials or Banner Finance modules.
* Experience with budget development and management within the Commonwealth of Virginia’s higher education system.
* Experience in developing and implementing financial policies and procedures.
* Experience with grant accounting and management.
* Experience in auditing financial records.
* Advanced Excel skills, including proficiency in complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret and present financial data effectively.
* Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ( GAAP ) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board ( GASB ).
* Ability to train and mentor others on financial processes and procedures.
* Experience using data visualization tools.
Remote Work Eligibility
Hybrid (works remotely at least 1 day per week but not full-time)
Advertised Pay Range
$54,000 - $60,000. All hiring rates are commensurate with relevant experience up to the advertised amount considering internal alignment.
